Master’s Men’s Basketball Rolls To 24th Straight Win – Santa Clarita Sports Report – February 12, 2018

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Division 1 No. 2 Master’s Mustangs have now won 24 straight games. The No. 1 team was upset this week at home. The new NAIA Coaches Top 25 comes out tomorrow.

In a season chalk full of record breaking excitement, another appears on the horizon. TMU is the likely top ranked team in NAIA when the new polls are released on Tuesday.

The Mustangs just can’t lose.

Saturday, they completed an 14-0 regular season home schedule with a 78-66 win over Arizona Christian.

Important of note, the Mustangs showed they can win in different ways when they don’t have their shooting touch. It didn’t matter that they went 5-for-23 from three point range for 21.7%, well below their season average of 38%, because they made adjustments that will always lead to a high probability of winning: defense and work in the paint.

TMU outscored Arizona Christian 38-14 in the paint and clamped down defensively, allowing just 29 points in the second half.

Master’s (25-1, 11-0) heads into the final regular season stretch with a brutal three-game road trip; it’s the best test they could ask for, though, with the GSAC and NAIA Tournaments upcoming.

No. 16 Westmont is up first on Saturday. Tip-off from Santa Barbara is at 7:30.

College of the Canyons

Both COC basketball teams are hitting their stride at the right time of the year.

Men’s Basketball: The Cougars have won 7 of 9 including a current three-game winning streak. Saturday, they edged Santa Monica 74-72 on the road to move to 4-2 in conference play. Michael Kalu led four scorers in double figures with 19 points.

Two more WSC South Division games remain and the Cougars sit tied for the top spot. They host Bakersfield on Wednesday before a potential showdown for the division against West LA on Saturday.

Women’s Basketball: The Lady Cougars are off to a 6-0 start in conference play and winning by an average of 30.2 points per game.

Kalana Inemer had a massive performance on Saturday at Santa Monica with 27 points, 17 rebounds, and 5 assists in a 108-70 victory.

They haven’t scored less than 75 points since January 5th.

Los Angeles Lakers

Isaiah Thomas made his Lakers debut Saturday after the trade that sent former Lakers draft picks Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance, Jr to the Cleveland Cavaliers last week.

And it was an uneven game for Thomas, scoring 22 points off the bench while committing six turnovers in a 130-123 loss at Dallas. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak.

Los Angeles is off til Wednesday, when they’ll be in New Orleans to face Anthony Davis and the Pelicans on Valentine’s Day.
