Megan Dawe Sets Saugus Girls Basketball Scoring Record

khts_sportsIt might be the best kept secret in the history of Saugus High School basketball.

Megan Dawe broke the school record for scoring in Wednesday’s CIF Southern Section Division 2A playoff game against Norco. She scored eight points to finish her high school career with 1,275 points.

But Saugus coach Kent Eaton said Dawe was unaware she was even close to setting the school record for scoring.

“Records? We haven’t told her she’s broken any records,” Eaton said. “Whatever you publicize is news to her. That’s not her concern. She’s doing it to win games.”

Dawe was instrumental in leading Saugus to a share of the Foothill League championship and into the second round of the Division 2A playoffs. Saugus lost to Norco, 58-38, ending a record-breaking career for Dawe.

“Her maturity showed through this season,” Eaton said. “She’s leading the team, but not just on the court. She’s picked up the slack in rebounding. I can only think of a couple of games anybody’s been able to keep her down.”

She not only set the school record for scoring, but set the single-season record with 570 points. Gabby Conn held the previous record for scoring at Saugus with 1,270 points from 2005-09.

Dawe will go down as one of the best high school basketball players in Foothill League history. She averaged 21 points per game in her senior season and will continue her basketball career at New York University. Perhaps she might join the impressive list of players from the Foothill League who played in the WNBA and professional leagues throughout the world.

Now that the season is over, Eaton said it is time to recognize the accomplishments of Dawe and her teammates.

“Records, that’s something to be celebrated when the season’s done,” Eaton said.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
