The last time NASCAR Camping World Series West driver Greg Pursley was on a road course, he was looking at a top-five finish at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma last month.
But the Canyon High graduate was caught up in a crash late in the race and ended up in 20th place.
He will put his road course skills to the test again Sunday at Portland International Raceway in Oregon. Pursley enters the Portland race in fourth place in the West Series standings. He is coming off a fifth-place finish at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on July 4.
“I like racing road courses,” Pursley said. “You have the chance to race your own race no matter where the other cars are. It is about pit strategy, teamwork, and driving every lap better than the next guy. The Portland layout will be a test but that is what makes racing fun. I expect a really good show and I am confident we can be there at the end.”
Pursley and his team have been testing at Button Willow Raceway near Bakersfield in preparation for the Portland race.
“I know Portland is flat and will require a good braking setup,” Pursley said. “The car tested really well and I am looking forward to racing on the Portland track. It is getting down to that point in the season when there are no mulligans and every lap counts. We had a great car at Sonoma until contact at the end so we are really focused on a better result this weekend.”
In softball, Valencia High graduate Jordan Taylor helped her team, the California Activities, to a fifth-place tie in the Canada Cup International Fastpitch Tournament.
Taylor, a junior pitcher at the University of Michigan, went 3-1 with a 2.53 ERA in the tournament. She allowed 27 hits and 12 walks, with 32 in strikeouts 27 1/3 innings.
