Ricky Avila Wins COC Cross Country Series Race

khts_sportsIn the College of the Canyons cross country series, 22-year-old Ricky Avila won the men’s race in 15 minutes, 8.7 seconds. He was followed by Omar Cortes in second place in 15 minutes, 46.6 seconds.

Saugus High graduate Kaylin Mahoney won the women’s race in 18 minutes, 29.7 seconds. Maritza Hernandez was second in 18 minutes, 41.7 seconds.

In the PONY Mustang World Series, the Hart baseball team shut out the Manilla Little Rascals from the Phillipines, 20-0. The Hart team is 2-0 in pool play and plays the Sinola team from Mexico today.

The championship games of the Mustang World Series begin Saturday in Texas.

In the major leagues, the Angels jumped all over the Twins, 7-1, behind a four-RBI game from rookie Mark Trumbo.

In other games, the Rangers beat the Tigers, 5-2, the Rays beat the Blue Jays, 7-6 in 11 innings, the Indians beat the Red Sox, 7-3, the Yankees beat the White Sox, 7-2 and the Royals beat the Orioles, 9-4.

In the National League, the Phillies shut out the Giants, 3-0, the Rockies doubled up on the Nationals, 6-3, the Cardinals beat the Marlins, 7-4, and the Cubs slipped past the Pirates, 7-6.
