Sabrina Janes Leads Three Saugus Runners At CIF State Track Finals

Saugus sophomore Sabrina Janes ran a personal best in the 800 meters at the CIF state track and field finals at Buchanan High School in Clovis and finished in seventh place.

Her time of 2 minutes, 11.98 seconds was the fastest by a sophomore from the Santa Clarita Valley. That includes Canyon High’s Alysia Montano, a 2012 Olympian, who ran the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 12.30 seconds as a sophomore in 2002.

Sophomore Samantha Ortega had quite a night in the 3,200. She lost her shoe midway through the race and started her end of the race kick a lap early. But she still finished in 11th place in 10 minutes, 39.96 seconds.

Senior Rodrigo Ornelas was 17th in the boys 3,200 race in 9 minutes, 17.68 seconds.

Valencia’s Olivia Pear was fifth in her heat in the 800 meters in the preliminaries and did not qualify for the final race.

Canyon’s Jeremy Kimmer cleared 6 feet, 5 inches in the high jump in the preliminaries and did not qualify for finals either.

In soccer, the Santa Clarita Blue Heat women’s team split its first two games of the W-League season.

The Blue Heat beat the LA Strikers, 3-2, on Friday night at The Master’s College. Kassi Massey and Stacey Rodwell each had a goal and an assist for the Blue Heat in their season opener.

The Blue Heat lost their second game of the season, 6-1, against the Pali Blues on Sunday night.

Ana Borges scored the lone goal for the Blue Heat, her first of the season.

In ice hockey, Valencia will play Antelope Valley for the Ice Station Valencia high school championship tonight. The puck drops at 6:15.

In the NHL playoffs, the Kings lost to the Chicago Blackhawks, 4-2, in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals. The Blackhawks were up 4-0 before the Kings scored their first goal.

The Kings are down, two games to none. Game 3 is at Staples Center on Tuesday night.

In baseball, the Dodgers lost to the Colorado Rockies, 7-2. The Dodgers, the last-place team in the National League West, lost two of three games to the Rockies over the weekend and have lost four of their past five games.

The Dodgers are home to start a series against the San Diego Padres tonight. Listen to the game on AM 1220, KHTS. First pitch is at 7:10.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
