Santa Clarita Christian Cruises To Second Round Of CIF Football Playoffs

khts_sportsThe Santa Clarita Christian football team is back to showing no mercy to its opponents.

Santa Clarita Christian beat Riverside Prep, 46-0, in a mercy-rule win in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division I 8-man football playoffs.

Quarterback Mark Hovey threw three touchdown passes, two to Ryan Espinosa. Santa Clarita Christian was up 46-0 at halftime and the game was called because of a 45-point mercy rule.

Jacob Nogle caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Hovey.

Santa Clarita Christian plays Laguna Blanca in the second round on Friday.

The Trinity Classical Academy football team lost in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division II 8-man playoffs.

Trinity lost to Immanuel Christian, 74-32, but the Knights had reason to celebrate their first season of varsity football. Trinity won the Omega League championship in its first season and made the playoffs for the first time.

Trinity quarterback Dakota Prochnow scored four rushing touchdowns, but only gained 31 yards on 22 carries. Running back Shane Larsen rushed for 113 yards and James Brooks caught 10 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown.

The College of the Canyons football team lost to Bakersfield College, 41-14, in its regular season finale, but earned a bowl berth.

COC will play in the Golden Empire Bowl against Fullerton College in Bakersfield on Saturday.

The CIF Southern Section playoff pairings were released Sunday with four teams from the Foothill League earning bids in the Northern Division bracket.

Valencia earned the No. 4 seed and will play Highland, the fourth-place team from the Golden League in the first round.

Canyon, the second place team from the Foothill League, will play Palmdale from the Golden League in the first round.

West Ranch is on the road and will play Palos Verdes, the second-place team from the Bay League, in the first round.

Saugus earned the only at-large bid in the playoffs and will play top-seeded Oaks Christian in the first round.

All games are set to start at 7 on Friday night.

In high school volleyball, the Valencia girls were eliminated from the CIF Southern Section Division 1-A playoffs after getting swept by Marymount in the quarterfinals.

Serena LeDuff had a team-high six kills in the loss. Setter Carly Carapella had 21 assists and Brooke Swanson had 12 digs.

The Lakers lost for the second time this season and for the first time at home. The Suns made 22 3-pointers and won 121-116.

Jason Richardson led the 3-point barrage for the Suns, making seven.

Pau Gasol scored 28 points and had 17 rebounds for the Lakers. Kobe Bryant was one rebound shy of a triple-double. He had 25 points, 14 assists and nine rebounds in the loss.

The Kings are on the road to play the San Jose Sharks tonight. The Kings are riding a six-game winning streak, including a 5-1 win over the New York Islanders on Saturday. The Sharks are coming off a 5-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.
