Santa Clarita Christian Girls Basketball Team Upsets No. 5 Lake Arrowhead Christian in CIF Playoffs

khts_sportsThe Santa Clarita Christian girls basketball team is starting to make a habit of winning CIF playoff games.

The Santa Clarita Christian girls knocked off fifth-seeded Lake Arrowhead Christian, 48-38, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 6A playoffs.

Taylor Cubas scored a season-high 37 points and had four steals for Santa Clarita Christian. Michelle Fechtelkotter had 17 rebounds and scored six points.

The Santa Clarita Christian girls won their first playoff game in school history on Tuesday night in the wild-card round.

All five of the Foothill League teams in the CIF Southern Section girls basketball playoffs will move on to the second round.

The Canyon girls basketball team easily handled Valley View, 50-38, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs.

Alia McCoy scored 15 points to lead Canyon.

The West Ranch girls beat Whittier, 55-49, in the first round of the Division 2AA playoffs. Kaylie Fandino paced the Wildcats with 14 points. Michele Arima scored 11 and Alexus Bryant had 10 for West Ranch.

The Saugus girls took care of Marina, 45-33, in the first round of the Division 2AA playoffs. Megan Dawe led a sluggish Saugus team with 17 points.

The Centurions scored only 16 points in the first half, but opened the game up in the second half, outscoring Marina, 29-22.

The Hart girls beat Rio Mesa, 68-59, in the first round of the Division 3AA playoffs. Mariah Glasshoff and Madison Stately each scored 16 points to lead Hart.

The Valencia girls won their first round game in the Division 1A playoffs, 45-28, over Diamond Bar. Lauren Spargo scored a game-high 20 points for Valencia. Teammate Jennifer Anumba had 14 rebounds and scored five points.

The Vasquez girls lost to North County Christian, 55-46 in overtime, in the first round of the Division 5AA playoffs.

The boys basketball playoffs resume tonight with second round action.

The Valencia boys are on the road against Murrieta Valley. The Canyon boys are home for a game against Canyon of Anaheim. The Trinity Classical Academy is home and will play Academy of Careers and Exploration in the Division 6A playoffs.

The girls soccer teams from the Foothill League had no luck, and did not generate much offense, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

The Saugus girls soccer team lost to Newport Harbor, 2-1, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

Saugus was down 2-0 in the second half when Serena Smith-Banas scored the lone goal for the Centurions.

Saugus entered playoffs with a 12-game unbeaten streak and won the Foothill League with a perfect 10-0 record.

The Valencia girls were shut out, 1-0 in overtime, against Mission Viejo in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs.

The two teams played to a scoreless tie in regulation before Mission Viejo scored the game winner in the final minutes of the first overtime period.

The Hart girls lost to Harvard-Westlake, 2-0, in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs. Harvard-Westlake scored two second-half goals and peppered Hart goalkeeper Kayce Perkins with 15 shots.

The Santa Clarita Christian girls beat Frazier Mountain, 4-3, on penalty kicks in the first round of the Division 7 playoffs. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw through regulation and overtime.

Santa Clarita Christian’s Colette Blake scored a goal in the second half that tied the game and sent it into overtime.

The West Ranch boys soccer team begins CIF playoffs with a game at home against Santa Maria in the Division 3 bracket.

The Valencia boys are on the road against Paramount. The Hart boys travel to Pacifica of Oxnard for their first round playoff game.

The Santa Clarita Christian boys are at Vistamar in the first round of the Division 7 playoffs.

The Master’s College baseball team swept a doubleheader against La Sierra. The Master’s College won the first game, 3-2, and the nightcap, 5-2.

Jared Otto went 2-for-3 and drove in a run in the first game for The Master’s College. Tanner Leighton was 2-for-3 with a home run in the second game.

The Kings lost to the New York Rangers, 4-3, in a shootout. Dustin Brown scored two goals in the game. His second goal of the game in the third period sent it into overtime.

The Kings are staying in New York for the weekend and will play the Islanders on Saturday. Listen to the game on AM 1220, KHTS. The puck drops at 4.
