Division 2 Championship, Game preview:  Valencia Hosts Oaks Christian In CIF SS Division 2 Championship Friday

Final

4 Oaks Christian (12-2): 20

3 Valencia (12-2): 19

Zach Charbonnet opened the scoring for Oaks Christian on a 44 yard TD run on the Lions opening drive.

A rare sight for the Vikings with back-to-back punts on their first two drives, but Mykael Wright takes over on Oaks Christian’s second offensive drive. The four-star junior intercepts Josh Calvert and then scores on a 33 yard TD catch to get the Vikings within one point after a missed point after.

After a defensive battle throughout the second quarter, Valencia broke through with under 2 minutes to play in the half on an 18 yard touchdown run by Moises Haynes. The Vikings tried a 2-pt conversion and Luring Paiali’i did not get in the end zone, making it a 12-7 game.

Oaks Christian answered immediately in 66 seconds with a touchdown from Lions QB Calvert to Fletcher to regain the lead going into halftime.

Mykael Wright continued his strong performance in the 3rd quarter with his second touchdown of the game. Wright made the biggest impact of the Vikings skill players, shifting momentum throughout the game (six catches for 82 yards, two touchdowns and an interception).

But Oaks Christian’s pass rush harassed Connor Downs all game long, led by five-star junior Kayvon Thibodeaux (three sacks). The Lions’ pass rush controlled the line of scrimmage in the quarter, shutting out the high powered Vikings offense.

OC did just enough on offense in the final 8 minutes, hitting two short field goals, including a 27 yarder with 2:12 left in the game to take a one point lead over Valencia.

Valencia QB Connor Downs sacked on 4th and 13 with 42 seconds left as Oaks Christian seals the championship. The Vikings season ends on their home field.

Division 6 Championship, Game preview: Golden Valley Hosts Bishop Diego In First CIF SS Championship Game

Final

1 Bishop Diego (13-1): 37

2 Golden Valley (8-6): 6

Down just 7-0 at the half, Golden Valley cut into the Bishop Diego lead with under a minute to play in the 3rd quarter thanks to a DJ Turner 31 yard touchdown run to make it 14-6 after a blocked extra point.

The Grizzlies had serious issues on special teams all night long that routinely halted any momentum they gained. A blocked field goal, blocked extra point and a botched snap on a punt that led to the Cardinals second touchdown.

Bishop Diego took over the fourth quarter with three touchdowns and added a safety late in the quarter. Likely Cal Poly commit John Harris had two second half rushing touchdowns for the Cardinals.

Golden Valley’s season ends as runner up in Division 6 in a historic night for the program, it’s first championship game.
