Santa Clarita Sports: COC Golf Earns Berth In State Tournament

The College of the Canyons men’s golf team won the Southern California Championship by 15 strokes at the Pauma Valley Country Club.

COC won the 36-hole tournament with a 4-over 723. Sophomore Sidney Wolf shot the low round of the tournament, an 8-under 136. He shot a pair of 4-under 68s in both rounds.

The Cougars earned a berth in the California Community College Athletic Association men’s golf state tournament at the Victoria Club in Riverside.

COC won the state title in 2013. The Cougars have won three Southern California championships. They won in 1989 and 2012 previously.

In high school golf, the Valencia boys won the Foothill League match by four shots over Hart at the Robinson Ranch Mountain Course.

Golden Valley’s Jonathan Kang shot the low round of the match, a 1-over 73. Quinton Tilley paced Valencia with a 2-over 74.

In high school softball, West Ranch beat Canyon, 13-1. The Wildcats are 7-0 in the Foothill League standings. Canyon dropped to 2-5.

The Saugus softball team shut out Hart, 7-0. The Centurions are a game behind West Ranch in the Foothill League standings at 6-1. Hart is 0-7.

Valencia held off Golden Valley, 17-14. The Vikings were up 14-3 after five innings. Golden Valley scored 11 runs in the sixth inning to tie the score, 14-14.

Wendy Cardinali hit a solo home run and Nicole Joseph knocked in two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win the game.

In college volleyball, The Master’s College has a new women’s volleyball coach. Allan Vince was hired as the new coach of the Lady Mustangs.

Vince was an assistant coach for the men’s volleyball team at California Baptist University. He was also an assistant for the United States men’s national team that competed in the Pan Am Games in 2013 and 2014.

The Master’s College women were 23-9 overall and 8-6 in the Golden State Athletic Conference in 2013.

Los Angeles Sports Report

In the major leagues, the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Washington Nationals, 8-3, and snapped a three-game losing streak.

Clayton Kershaw won in his return from the disabled list. He pitched seven shutout innings giving up nine hits. He struck out nine and walked none.

The rubber game between the Dodgers and the Nationals is this morning. Dan Haren starts for the Dodgers. Stephen Strasburg is on the hills for the Nationals. First pitch is at 10:05.
