Santa Clarita Sports: Four Girls Basketball Teams Make Playoffs, Three Advance

Four girls basketball teams from the Foothill League entered the CIF Southern Section playoffs. Three advanced to the second round.

Hart, Canyon and Golden Valley cruised in their first-round playoffs games.

The Valencia girls were eliminated in their opening round game.

Hart crushed Sultana, 66-20, in the first round of the Division 2A playoffs and won its first playoff game in three years.

The Golden Valley girls won their first-round game in the Division 2A playoffs, 57-37, over Rancho Alamitos. The Golden Valley girls won their first playoff game in school history.

It was their fourth appearance in the CIF playoffs. They lost in the first round in 2006, 2007 and 2011.

The Canyon girls knocked out El Toro, 81-36, in the first round of the Division 1A playoffs. The Canyon girls were up 44-17 at halftime.

The Valencia girls put up quite a fight, but lost, 53-52, to JW North in the first round of the Division 1AA playoffs. Valencia was eliminated from the playoffs.

On the boys side, Valencia ousted Quartz Hill, the Golden League champion, from the Division 1AA playoffs. Valencia won the game, 75-60.

The Hart boys basketball team beat a pesky Beckman team, 92-61, in the first round of the Division 2A playoffs. Hart trailed early in the first quarter and led, 45-35, at halftime.

The Canyon boys beat Loara, 84-42, on the road in the first round of the Division 2AA playoffs.

The West Ranch boys lost to Milikan from Long Beach, 105-70, in the first round of the Division 1AA playoffs.

The Trinity Classical Academy boys eliminated Lee Vining, 100-55, in the second round of the Division 6 playoffs.

In high school soccer, the Hart girls shut out Ventura, 2-0, in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs.

The Valencia girls shut out Santa Barbara, 3-0, in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs.

The Canyon girls lost to Newbury Park, 2-1, in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs.

The West Ranch girls lost to Chino Hills, 4-2 on penalty kicks, in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs.

In the NBA, the Clippers beat the Thunder in Oklahoma City, 125-117.

The Lakers lost to the Brooklyn Nets, 108-102.

In the Winter Olympics, Russia won the medal count with 33, 13 of them gold. The United State was second with 28. Norway was third with 26 medals.
