Santa Clarita High School Baseball

Friday scoreboard:

Saugus: 3

West Ranch: 8

The Wildcats take the season series 2-1 to move into sole possession of second place in the league at 6-3.

Will Chambers hit his Santa Clarita Valley leading eighth home run of the season, displaying his toughness while battling through a hurt knee.

“That was an absolutely huge home run–he’s banged up in the knee but, man, he can fight, that’s for sure,” said West Ranch starting pitcher Cade Nicol after the game. Nicol pitched another complete game with seven strikeouts to move to 4-2 on the season while shaving a few points off his ERA (2.02).

Hewitt Grissom, son of Saugus’ head coach Carl Grissom, hit a 2-run homer in the sixth inning. It was his first of the season.

Hart: 15

Golden Valley: 2

No Roederer, no problem for the Indians as they pummeled the Grizzlies with 15 runs and 19 hits to complete the season sweep. While Cole Roederer continues to nurse a lower right leg strain, the Indians sit atop the Foothill standings with a 7-2 record. Ryan Coralan moved to 5-1 with a health 1.62 ERA after pitching six innings of one-run ball.

Hart outscored GV 43-5 in the series.

Junior Kendall Thomas had his best game of the season, going 4-for-4 with two doubles and a home run. He drove in six runs.

The Grizzlies (8-13, 0-9) are still searching for their first league win.

Canyon: 6

Valencia: 5

Canyon slipped past Valencia for a huge win to get to 4-5, just two games out of second place and a valuable win when it comes to building a playoff résumé.

Junior Cebastian Arriaga led the Cowboys with a 3-for-4 day, including a double, his first career home run, and three RBIs. He’s batting .355 on the season.

Monday’s Heritage League schedule:

Valley Torah vs 8 Trinity Classical Academy at 7:00

Guidance Charter vs Santa Clarita Christian at 4:00

College of the Canyons

Baseball: The Cougars did great to bounce back from a 9-0 thrashing last Tuesday, to take the next two against first-place Glendale and winning the season series.

Saturday’s 5-2 win was a particular strong team effort, with Calvin Estrada hitting his tenth homer of the season and Jackson Cunnigham and Jarrett Poh combining for eight strikeouts and only one earned run.

At 13-4, COC is a game behind Glendale with one series left to play. The Cougars will play Victor Valley this week, last place in the Western State Conference – East Division.

Softball: Canyons dropped both games of a double-header against Palomar on Saturday, but will get the chance to reset and take their WSC East victory lap this week against Barstow and Mt. SAC.

The Cougars already beat Barstow 13-0 earlier in the season.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers have won six out of their last seven games after Sunday’s 4-3 win over the Nationals gave them the 2-1 series victory.

Los Angeles was down 3-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning, when Yasmani Grandal continued his blistering April with a 2-RBI double to start the late rally. Grandal is hitting .349 to start the year.

A sacrifice fly by Corey Seager would decide the game in the seventh.

Kenley Jansen looked more like his normal self in picking up his third save of the season. He had two strikeouts in the ninth inning.

Tonight will be special at Dodger Stadium, because Dodgers top prospect Walker Buehler will make his first career start after spending the first few weeks of the season in Triple-A. He had a 2.08 ERA in 13 innings of work in the Minors this month.

He’ll be up against Jarlin Garcia of the Miami Marlins. The 5-16 Miami Marlins, to be more specific. First pitch is at 7:10, and catch every inning of Walker’s starting debut live on your Dodgers station in the Santa Clarita Valley, KHTS FM 98.1.
