Santa Clarita Sports Report: December 15, 2014

Santa Clarita Sports Report: December 15, 2014: Saugus High senior Abbey Weitzeil set the American record in the 100-yard freestyle at the 2014 Speedo Winter Junior National Championship in Florida.

She set the record while competing in the 4×100 freestyle relay. She swam her leg in 46.29 seconds. Simone Manuel, a freshman at Stanford, held the previous record in 46.62 seconds.

In college basketball, The Master’s College women knocked off Vanguard, 71-64. Vanguard is the No. 3 team in the NAIA. The Master’s College women, ranked No. 20 in the NAIA, beat a top-20 team for the second time in a row.

Whitney Best scored 16 points and had 11 rebounds for The Master’s College. The Lady Mustangs have won three games in a row.

The Master’s College men lost to Vanguard, 76-65, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game. The Master’s College men dropped to 2-6 and 0-3 in conference.

In college soccer, Marissa Kneisel from College of the Canyons was selected as the Western State Conference Player of the Year.

COC coach Justin Lundin was selected as Western State Conference Coach of the Year.

Kneisel, a Canyon High graduate, led the Western State Conference in points with 55. She scored 20 goals in 22 games. She had three hat tricks and scored multiple goals in six games.

In high school basketball, the Valencia boys finished with a win over Oxnard, 78-72 in overtime, in the Ventura County Classic. The Vikings went 4-1 in the tournament.

The Canyon boys lost to Westlake, 73-52, in the Ventura County Classic. Ben Taufahema scored 13 points against Westlake and was selected to the all-tournament team.

In the NBA, the Lakers beat the Minnesota Timberwolves, 100-94, and Kobe Bryant moved past Michael Jordan for third all-time in scoring.

Los Angeles Sports

Bryant scored 26 points against the Timberwolves. He is now the third-highest scorer in NBA history. Only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone have scored more points.

Next up for the Lakers are the Pacers tonight in Indiana.

In the NHL, the Kings lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs, 4-3, in a shootout. The Maple Leafs won the shootout, 1-0. The Kings are 1-3 on their current road trip.

They wrap up their roadie against the Blues in St. Louis on Tuesday.
