COC Athletics
The 2016/17 Canyons basketball seasons finished up Saturday with home games for both teams against West LA.
The Cougars women’s were victorious, 68-48, and finish the season 11-15. Canyons men’s team didn’t end on as good of a note, falling 71-66 and ending the season with a 12-16 record.
TMU Athletics
The big news of the day out of the The Master’s University Athletics Department is the announcement of an Aquatics Program to launch in Fall of 2017.
US Olympic bronze medalist Gabe Woodward will lead the program as the Director of Aquatics. The team will compete in both swimming and diving.
TMU Basketball had a good weekend with a sweep of Menlo College on Bross Court. The men’s team jumped ahead of Westmont by a half-game for third place with a 92-81 win. Five players scored in double figures for the Mustangs (22-4, 11-4).
The women’s team has won eight consecutive conference games after starting 2-5 and five of the wins have come by double-digits, including the 62-50 win over Menlo on Saturday. The Mustangs are in fourth place in the Golden State Athletic Conference with a 10-5 record.
Los Angeles Lakers
In one of the biggest moves of the NBA season, the Lakers announced on Tuesday that VP of Basketball Operations Jim Buss and General Manager Mitch Kupchak have been fired, effectively immediately. Lakers Hall of Famer Magic Johnson was named President of Basketball Operations and will lead the day-to-day operations for the forseeable future.
The only peculiar thing from this news was the timing. Firing a head coach or the entire front office midseason is never a good look for any professional sports team.
With that being said, the writing was on the wall and the Lakers are headed in a new direction.
