Santa Clarita Sports Report: January 07, 2015: The College of the Canyons men’s basketball team begins play in the Western State Conference against Antelope Valley College.

The COC men are coming off a 70-69 loss to Orange Coast College in the championship game of the Cougar Holiday Classic tournament.

COC had a four-game winning streak snapped against Orange Coast College. They are 8-5.

The College of the Canyons women’s basketball team also opens Western Conference play tonight against Antelope Valley College.

The COC women won third-place game in the East Los Angeles College Husky Tournament over LA Trade Tech, 73-61.

Monica Friedl scored 13 points and had 24 rebounds against LA Trade Tech and was selected to the all-tournament team.

The Lady Cougars improved to 10-5.

In high school football, Hart’s Trent Irwin decided to play for Stanford, according to various media reports. The senior receiver is the state leader in receptions and receiving yards.

Irwin told the Daily News he was debating between Stanford and Arizona State.

In the NBA, the Lakers play the Clippers in a showdown at Staples Center.

Both teams are coming off losses. The Lakers lost to the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night.

The Clippers lost to the Atlanta Hawks on Monday.
