Santa Clarita High School Baseball

Three Santa Clarita teams are moving on to the CIF-SS quarterfinals, including both Foothill League teams in the second round.

CIF-SS Division 1 Second Round

West Ranch (23-9) used a 3-run fourth inning to overcome a 2-0 deficit at home Tuesday against Norco to advance to the next round with a 3-2 victory. The win marks seven in a row and the Wildcats are 16-2 since the start of April, making them the third hottest team in CIF-SS Division 1 baseball.

Senior Jack Cunningham went the distance for the Cats, allowing two runs and just five hits to earn the win, his fifth of the season.

Next up for West Ranch is a date on the road with the fourth best team in the country, the El Toro Chargers on Friday.

Robert Reeves added to his Hart High legacy Tuesday in a big way. The Senior catcher blasted a walk-off home run to right field to give the Hart Indians (20-11) another dramatic eighth-inning playoff victory, their second extra innings win in as many games.

Reeves was 0-3 with two strikeouts before activating his clutch gene in the bottom of the eighth against Corona. Nick Plaia hit the other solo shot in the sixth inning in another one-run win for Hart, 2-1.

The Indians received another excellent start from budding sophomore Ryan Carolan, who went five innings and struck out six batters to keep the game close.

Friday, Hart will need to take their play to an ever higher level when the No. 2 team in the country comes to Newhall, JSerra (and their ten-game winning streak).

CIF-SS Division 7 Second Round

Albert Einstein Academy (13-5) bowed out of the tournament in disappointing fashion, shellacked by Hesperia Christian at home, 16-2. The Rockets gave up runs in each of the first four innings and never recovered.

Coming off a bye, the No. 2 Santa Clarita Christian Cardinals (13-5) didn’t miss a beat, defeating Coast Union 7-5 to move on to the quarters.

Next for the Cardinals is No. 8 Academic Academy for Excellence at home on Friday.

Santa Clarita High School Softball

Valencia (21-9) has outscored its first two playoff opponents 9-0 and is one of the hottest teams in the state, riding a 10-game winning streak into the quarterfinals.

Tuesday, the Vikings shutout No. 5 Pacifica 6-0 at home with another stellar outing from sophomore right-hander Shea O’Leary.

Thursday’s quarterfinal round pits Valencia against Division 1 defending champion and No. 4 ranked Norco High School. The Cougars come into the game on a ten-game streak of their own.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Justin Turner drove in three runs and Mike Bolsinger struck out six Reds in 5.2 innings to beat the Cincinatti, 8-2 and take the series.

LA (24-23) goes for the sweep tonight at Chavez Ravine. First pitch is at 7:10 with Scott Kazmir on the mound. Catch all the action live on AM-1220 KHTS
