Santa Clarita Sports Report – May 26, 2017

The Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers will face each other in the NBA Finals for the third straight year. Championships are tied at 1-1.

Santa Clarita High School Softball

Thursday’s CIF-SS Quarter Final scoreboard:

Division I

6 Valencia 0

3 Orange Lutheran 1

It was a tight a pitcher’s duel could be Thursday afternoon at Orange Lutheran, the site of the D1 quarterfinals.

A throwing error ended up being the difference in the heavyweight bout between Shea O’Leary (third consecutive postseason complete game) and Maddy Dwyer.

The Vikings fall in the Quarters for the second year in a row.

Division III

Patriot 8

Hart 9

Hart’s improbable postseason run isn’t finished quite yet. Thursday, senior Abby Sweet hit a walk-off bomb to send the Indians to the D3 semifinals in seven seasons.

The fifth win in a row for the Indians’ whose offense has come alive during this run. They’ve averaged 9.6 runs in the current streak.

Hart will host No. 6 Ayala (24-10) in the Semi Finals on Tuesday.

The Master’s University Baseball

Make it an incredible ten postseason victories in a row for the Mustangs. Friday, The Master’s defeated University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, 7-3, to open the NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho.

Jason Karkenny pitched seven strong innings, allowing just one earned run to move to 6-2 on the season. The Mustangs had one bad inning, the fourth, where the committed two defensive errors, but recovered to tack on a couple insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

TMU has five wins over top 25 teams in the 2017 postseason.

Saturday, the Mustangs face No. 4 Faulkner. First pitch is at 3 o’clock.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Hyun-Jin Ryu helped pick up the slack for Kenta Maeda (five innings, three earned runs) in his first-ever relief appearance, and turned in a long-relief save on Thursday night.

Ryu pitched the final four innings and shutout the Cardinals to preserve a 7-3 win.

Chase Utley, the 38-year-old wonder, launched his first home run of his 14th season in the win.

Los Angeles opens a weekend series tonight with the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs. First pitch from Dodger Stadium is at 7:10.

TRANSACTIONS: the Dodgers moved Andrew Toles and Scott Kazmir to the 60-day disabled list, while claiming Mike Freeman and Chris Heston from the Mariners
