Santa Clarita High School Baseball

Friday’s CIF-SS quarterfinals proved to be every bit the competition you’d expect at this point in the CIF-SS playoffs with the top teams in not just the region, but the country going at it.

Division 1

No. 1 JSerra flexed on the Hart Indians (20-12), scoring two or more runs in each of the first five innings in a 13-1 victory.

The lone bright spot of the game was junior pitcher Cody Turner, who came in to stop the bleeding after JSerra plated 13 and pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball.

Timmy Josten dominated No. 2 El Toro, tossing a complete game four-hitter to send West Ranch (24-8) to the semifinals with a 2-1 triumph on the road. Josten had a shutout going until the bottom of the seventh inning.

With the win, West Ranch extends its winning streak to eight games, and 17 of its last 18 overall.

The Wildcats juniors led the way not only on the mound but at the plate as well. Aaron Hernandez and Nico Valdez, both members of the 2017 class, drove in the two runs.

Tuesday, the Wildcats head to Blair Field in Long Beach for their Semifinal matchup with Murrieta Mesa.

Division 1 Semifinal:

No. 6 Murrieta Mesa (25-7) vs West Ranch (24-8) at 4:00

Division 7

Heartbreak for the No. 2 Santa Clarita Christian Cardinals (13-6) on Friday. A 1-1 game in the top of the seventh inning, No. 8 Academy for Academic Excellence scored the go-ahead run and added another for insurance to take a 3-1 lead.

And the Cardinals couldn’t recover in their last at-bats, falling 3-1 to AAE in the quarterfinals.

The Master’s College

The Mustangs (42-19) were eliminated from the NAIA World Series on Monday morning, finishing 1-2 in the tournament after narrowly falling to Sterling, 9-7.

Sterling’s Gerald Ceballos hit the go-ahead home run to break the tie in the top of the ninth inning to devastate TMC.

The Mustangs defeated Science & Arts of Oklahoma 6-1 on Saturday to extend their season to Monday. TMC lost the NAIA World Series opener against Lindsey Wilson, 7-1.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers (27-25) took two of three from the Mets at Citi Field over the weekend and had a quick turnaround to Chicago to open a series with the National League-leading Cubs on Monday.

And the Cubs proved why, shutting out Los Angeles, 2-0.

Tonight, the Dodgers face one of the early front runners for the NL Cy Young, Jake Arrieta (9-0, 1.72 ERA).

First pitch is at 5:05, and you can listen to every inning live on AM-1220 KHTS.
