Santa Clarita Sports Report – November 20, 2017

CIF SS Playoff Football

The Santa Clarita Valley went .500 in the CIF SS Quarterfinals, with Valencia, Golden Valley and Saugus advancing to the Semifinals on Black Friday. All Semifinal matchups will kickoff at 7:30 on Friday unless otherwise specified.

Division 2

2 Heritage (11-1) vs 3 Valencia (11-1)

Division 6

1 Bishop Diego (11-1) vs 6 Saugus (6-6)

4 Golden Valley (7-5) vs 9 Mira Costa (4-6)

CIF Division 5 State Volleyball Playoffs

The SCCS Cardinals went down 2-1 to Carnegie and forced a decided Game 5 with a 25-22 win in Game 4, but fell in a tight fifth set 15-12 as the Wolverines ended their season in the second round of the State tournament.

Santa Clarita Christian finishes the season 19-7 overall.

COC Football

The College of the Canyons Cougars ended the 2017 on a high note, downing Mt. SAC 28-16 in the Western States Bowl to finish 9-2 on the season and fifth win in a row.

Andrew Brito capped a strong season by taking home MVP honors for the bowl game. Brito threw three touchdown passes, finishing the year with 30 touchdown passes to just seven interceptions.

Canyons dramatic improvement offensively from 2016 to 2017 was a major reason for success. The Cougars increased their scoring output by a full 12 points per game. They scored 40 or more points six times.

TMU Athletics

Women’s Soccer: Victoria Gama scored in the 38th minute to defeat Olivet Nazarene 1-0 and send the Mustangs to the NAIA National Tournament in Orange Beach, Alabama next week. The Mustangs will play Tennessee Wesleyan in the opening game next Tuesday (11/28).

Men’s Basketball: the Mustangs are a perfect 5-0 at home to start the season, with wins over Antelope Valley (83-62) and Life Pacific (97-75) over the weekend. They’ll play Westcliff University at home tomorrow night.

Women’s Basketball: the Mustangs keeping pace with the men’s team with a perfect 4-0 record at Bross Court after beating Montana Tech (65-59) and Ottawa (73-49) in the Jersey Mike’s Classic. TMU hosts Carroll this afternoon at 4:00 in search of a fifth straight win.
