Santa Clarita Sports Report – October 11, 2017

Santa Clarita High School Volleyball

Tuesday’s scoreboard:

Canyon (0-5): 0

Valencia (5-1): 3

The Vikings made quick work of Canyon Tuesday night winning in straight sets by the scores of 25-2, 25-11, and 25-22. The Vikings controlled the mach from the first point, though the Cowboys improved as the match went on, scoring more points in each game.

Valencia moved to 5-1 in Foothill League play and will look for revenge against Hart Thursday. Canyon fell to 0-5 in league and faces Saugus Thursday. -Jared Brosnan, KHTS Sports

Hart (6-0): 3

Golden Valley (0-5): 0

Hart took care of business on the road at Golden Valley, setting up the first place showdown at Valencia on Thursday. The Indians are 18-6 in Foothill sets this season. GV faces West Ranch next, still looking for the all-important first league win.

West Ranch (3-3): 3

Saugus (3-3): 2

The most exciting match of the night was at Saugus where the third place battle between the Centurions and Wildcats needed five games to decide a winner. After the Wildcats got out to a 2-0 lead, the Centurions stormed back with 25-17 and 25-15 wins. Both teams played to a dramatic finish, with West Ranch emerging in a 15-13 fifth game.

US Soccer

A nightmare scenario played out Tuesday night at Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, Trinidad. The US Men’s National Team sealed a historically awful World Cup qualifying campaign by suffering its worst defeat in team history, 2-1, at the hands of Trinidad & Tobago. Trinidad & Tobago came in to the match with nothing to play for and at the bottom of the CONCACAF standings (just one win in group qualifying), while USA needed at least a tie to advance to a playoff against Australia. A win would clinch a World Cup berth outright.

In order for the Americans to miss the World Cup altogether, they would need to 1) lose 2) Honduras beat Mexico and 3) Panama beat Costa Rica. And, in stunning fashion, all three events came to fruition.

For the first time since 1986, the United States will not be competing in the world’s biggest sporting event.

COC Volleyball

The 11th ranked Cougars volleyball team hosts West LA in the first conference match of the season. COC (13-4) is riding a five-game winning streak into the Western Conference opener. First serve is at 6:00.
