Santa Clarita Sports Report – October 5, 2015

Santa Clarita Sports Report – October 5, 2015: This is your place for Santa Clarita’s slate of Fall 2015 sports. Keep it here for news and updates on your hometown schools as they compete in the Western State Conference, Foothill League, Heritage League and GSAC.

Let’s go around the Santa Clarita Valley for the weekend roundup…

Santa Clarita High School Football

Well, the 2015 Valencia Vikings (2-3) can say they went head to head on the road to arguably the best high school football team in the country. What they can’t say is that they were competitive in the game.

Centennial handled Valencia with ease in Corona on Friday night, cruising to a 52-0 halftime lead, which set up a running clock throughout the 2nd half. The game ended 59-7, thus concluding Valencia’s non-league schedule. Up next for the Vikings will be the Foothill League opener Friday, October 9, when they host the Golden Valley Grizzlies.

Foothill League play begins Friday for all of our schools, and based on the first six weeks of the season, the Hart Indians (4-1) will be the team to beat in the league this year. Coming off a gut-wrenching finish against St. Bonaventure last week, the Indians got back on track at Cougar Stadium against the visiting Ventura Cougars, 29-21. Hart will open on the road at struggling Canyon High School Friday in the first Rivalry Game of the year.

Elsewhere around Santa Clarita, two other football teams were in action over the weekend.

Santa Clarita Christian (4-1) turned in a dominating performance in their San Joaquin League opener, beating Southlands Christian, 54-18. The Cardinals offense continues to produce in the passing game, with quarterback Tristan Miller averaging 350 yards a game to go along with his 27 passing touchdowns in just five games.

Trinity Classical Academy (3-1) might look to schedule differently in the future as they fully adjust to 11 man football, as they destroyed the overmatched California School for the Deaf, 68-0. Junior tailback Caden Kulp had four touchdowns on the ground in the victory.

The next greatest Santa Clarita football rivalry will begin Saturday night at Canyon High School, where Trinity Classical Academy and Santa Clarita Christian will do battle. KHTS will have more information to come on this matchup as we get closer to kickoff.

COC Football

Save for one busted play, the Cougars defense churned out another routine performance Saturday, allowing just seven points through three quarters en route to a 20-14 conference win over winless Bakersfield.

The #2 Cougars are 5-0 and will keep it going as they take a midseason break from WSC play to take on Saddleback on the road this week.

The Master’s College

Saugus’ own Trevor Mangan scored a brace, and the Mustangs stout defense led the way to a 4-0 victory over William Jessup Saturday evening. The 18th ranked Mustangs are looking to move up the rankings after two straight GSAC wins. They’ll face off with Westmont in Santa Barbara Wednesday.

The Lady Mustangs took care of business at Reese Field on Saturday, defeating William Jessup 2-1, in large part to a William Jessup own goal just fifteen minutes into the match. They’ll have their hands full Tuesday when they travel up to #9 ranked Westmont.

TMC’s Lady Mustangs volleyball team has had a tough go of late. After opening up 4-0 in conference play, the Mustangs have dropped three straight against ranked GSAC foes. Tuesday brings a road trip to Fullerton at Hope International, and it is pivotal the Mustangs get back on track to maintain hopes of a GSAC title.

Los Angeles Doders

In 2002, the Arizona Diamondbacks rode a 1-2 Hall of Fame caliber starting pitcher duo to a World Series title. Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling carried those Diamondbacks throughout the playoffs and eventually to a 4-3 series victory over the New York Yankees.

The Los Angeles Dodgers feel that they have a similar team makeup with Zach Greinke (looking to become just the sixth pitcher in MLB to win the CY Young in both leagues with his ice cold 1.66 ERA) and Clayton Kershaw (the greatest pitcher of his generation).

Clayton Kershaw added another impressive accomplishment to his already HOF career, notching 300 strikeouts in the 2015 season as the Dodgers closed the year on a high note beating the Padres, 6-3.

That stellar punchout record is only the second in Dodgers history (first completed by the great Sandy Koufax) and has not been reached since the 2002 season, when two pitchers managed it.

Those two pitchers? Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling.

The Dodgers open the NLDS at Chavez Ravine Friday night against the New York Mets.

  1. Mr. Justin Powell has added another impressive accomplishment to his brief experience broadcasting online this year, notching a bitchin blog about the Dodgers pitchers and comparing them to the 2002 Diamondbacks. Justin, you’ve closed the year on a high note and have obviously mastere the are of the adjective. Keep pitchin’ those great lines.
