Saugus High’s Abbey Weitzeil earned a spot on the United States national swim team in the 100 meters freestyle.
She finished fourth in the 100 freestyle at the US national swim championship in Irvine. Her time of 54.38 seconds was a personal best in the 100 freestyle and 0.95 seconds behind Missy Franklin, the race winner and a five-time Olympic medalist.
Weitzeil will compete with the US national team at the Pan Pacific Championships in Australia from Aug. 21-25.

She will compete in the 50 freestyle at the United States national swim team championships on Sunday.

In cross country, the fifth race in the College of the Canyons series is tonight.
Dan Hurst won the fourth race in the COC Cross Country Series last week.
Elaine Woodward won the women’s race.
Tonight’s race starts at 7 at COC.
