Golden Valley’s Jonathan Kang shot a 7-over 79 in the CIF/SCGA Southern California Championship at Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena and fell short of advancing to the state tournament.
He finished in a tie for 67th place at Brookside. Sage Kasaga of Murrieta Valley won the Southern California championship with a 4-under 68. The cut to qualify for the state tournament was even par.
Kang had five bogeys and a double bogey. He birdied only one hole.
Kang is the first boys golfer from Golden Valley to reach the CIF/SCGA Southern California Championship.

In women’s soccer, the Santa Clarita Blue Heat lost to the Bay Area Breeze, 2-0, in a USL W League game.
The Blue Heat are 1-2 after the first three games of the season. They take on the Colorado Storm at The Master’s College on Friday.
In auto racing, Jack Hawksworth, driving for Bryan Herta Autosport in the Verizon IndyCar Series, posted a pair of top 20s in the Dual in Detroit.
Hawksworth finished in 19th place in the first race after challenging for the lead early on. He followed with a 14th place finish in the second race.
The next race in the IndyCar Series is the Firestone 600 at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday.

In the major leagues, the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the visiting Chicago White Sox, 5-2, in an interleague game at the Ravine.
The Dodgers scored all five runs in the sixth inning. Clayton Kershaw won his fourth game of the season.
The Dodgers and White Sox continue their series tonight. Dan Haren starts for the Dodgers against Hector Noesi for the White Sox.
