Saugus Baseball Team Crushes Verdugo Hills, 15-4

sportslocalThe Saugus baseball team pounded Verdugo Hills, 15-4, in the Southern California Invitational.

Nick Lombardi had a huge day, hitting two home runs and driving in six runs. Michael Soucy hit a home run and had two RBIs and Scott Kerrigan earned the win on the mound.

Next up for Saugus is Newbury Park on Wednesday.

The Canyon baseball team lost to Chatsworth, 8-1, in the Easton Tournament. Patrick Roxbury hit a solo home run for Canyon’s only run.

In high school softball, Valencia and Oxnard played to a 1-1 tie in 11 innings. Carly Mortensen pitched all 11 innings striking out six. Madison Shipman went 2-for-5, scoring the only run for Valencia. Lauren Boser also went 2-for-5 in the game.

Valencia begins play in the Tournament of Champions in Arizona on Thursday.

The Hart softball team won the night cap of a doubleheader against Moorpark. The first game ended in a scoreless tie after eight innings. Emili Escamilla struck out 12 and pitched eight scoreless innings in the first game for Hart.

Paxton Provost drove in two runs and Jessie Jones drove in one in the second game for Hart.

In high school golf, West Ranch finished sixth out of 16 teams in the Harvard-Westlake Invitational at Saticoy Country Club. J.J. Holen shot a 4-over 76 and was sixth overall in the invitational. Isaac Kim was 9-over at 81.

In high school tennis, the Hart boys beat Highland, 13-5. Joe Reyes swept his singles matches for Hart.

In college baseball, The Master’s College lost to Vanguard, 10-9, in an abbreviated, seven-inning affair. Vanguard scored five runs in the sixth inning capped by a two-run triple by Tyson Leighton.

Ben Ives went 2-for-3 and hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning for The Master’s College. Joe Zeller was 3-for-3 with four RBIs.

The Dodgers are looking to A.J. Ellis to fill in for catcher Russell Martin, who is recovering from a groin injury and is expected to miss the start of the season.

So who is Ellis? He is a 28-year-old prospect with 13 career major league at-bats in 12 games over the past two years.

He had one hit and one RBI in 10 at-bats in 2009. His hit was the first and only hit of his major league career.

Some more potentially bad news for the Dodgers: veteran third baseman Casey Blake was pulled out of the team’s spring training game against the Giants because of a trained rib cage muscle. Blake played only two innings, but it looks like his injury isn’t that serious. Manager Joe Torre told ESPN that the move was precautionary.

Dodgers reliever Cory Wade, on the other hand, will miss the next two weeks after getting a cortisone shot in his right shoulder. The injury is the same one that landed Wade on the disabled list twice last year.

The Kings thoroughly embarrassed the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets, 6-0. Alexander Frolov scored a goal and had three assists. The Kings scored four goals in the first period and chased Jackets’ starting goaltender, Steve Mason before the period ended. Jonathan Quick had a relatively easy night in goal, making 11 saves to record the shutout.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
