The Saugus girls soccer team is alive and playing well in the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs.
Hart and Valencia were knocked out of the playoffs after losing on penalty kicks.
Saugus, the reigning Division II champs, beat Yucaipa, 5-2, getting all its goals from five different players. Emily Relles, Kaitlyn Hamersky, Brittanie Sakajian, Nicole Penick and Lauren Cech scored for Saugus in the team’s second-round playoff game.
Hart lost to Redlands East Valley, 3-2, on penalty kicks. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie in regulation and overtime. Brittani Reddick gave Hart an early 1-0 lead, but Redlands East Valley scored late in the second half to tie the game and send it into overtime.
The Valencia girls lost to Laguna Hills, 7-6, on penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 draw. Valencia also took an early 1-0 lead after Kristin Bos knocked in a header in the 29th minute. Laguna Hills tied the game in the second half and went on to win the game on penalty kicks.
In high school basketball playoffs, the Canyon girls lost to Edison, 63-48, in the quarterfinals of the Division IIAA playoffs. Canyon’s Brooke LeMar scored 18 points to lead Canyon. Teammate Alexus Bryant added 13.
Hart High graduate and Washington State sophomore Rachel Krager is back in Southern California for the Pac-10 women’s swimming championships at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach.
She is competing in three events, the 500 freestyle, the 200 butterfly and the mile in the Pac-10 championships. Her first race is today in the 500 freestyle.
The Pac-10 women’s swimming championships started Wednesday night with USC winning the 800 freestyle relay and Arizona taking the 200 medley relay.
The Lakers lost to the new-look Dallas Mavericks, 101-96, and Kobe Bryant had an off-night shooting. Bryant scored 20 points and made only nine of 23 shots.
Dirk Nowitzki scored 31 points and Jason Terry poured in 30 for Dallas.
The Clippers won their third game in a row, knocking off the Detroit Pistons, 97-91. Chris Kaman had 21 points and 15 rebounds. One of the newest Clippers, Drew Gooden, scored 20 points and had 13 rebounds.
In the Winter Olympics, the U.S. men’s hockey team scored two third-period goals in a 2-0 shutout over Switzerland. Zach Parise scored both goals for the United States and Ryan Miller made 19 saves in goal.
Next up for the United States is Finland in the semifinals. Finland beat Czech Republic, 2-0.
The United States has 28 medals in the Winter Olympics. Germany is second with 24. Both countries have won seven gold medals.
