The Saugus boys and girls cross country teams won the first Foothill League meet at Central Park on Wednesday, but Golden Valley and West Ranch had reason to celebrate too.Golden Valley’s Seth Totten won the boys race. West Ranch’s Jennifer Owen won the girls race. She was followed by teammate Bailey Miller in second.
The first league cross country meet was finally completed after being suspended a week because of poor air quality.
The Saugus boys and girls teams will be traveling to New York to compete in Saturday’s 45th annual McQuaid Invitational in Rochester. Since 2005, the winner of the McQuaid Invitational has gone on to win the Nike Cross Country Nationals in Portland, Ore.
In high school golf, the Hart girls won their second Foothill League match by another huge margin. Nikki Prichard led Hart to a 31-stroke win and shot 2-under par 31 at Vista Valencia Golf Course. All five Hart golfers shot in the 30s for a team score of 177.
Saugus, led by Nicole DeFrancisco’s 2-over par 35, was second at 208.
In college soccer, The Master’s College’s Joel Peluffo scored three goals, a hat trick, in his team’s 4-2 win over Fresno Pacific. Peluffo scored twice in the first half and added his third goal in the 63rd minute.
Marlon Lindo scored the other goal for The Master’s College, a perfect 2-0 in Golden State Athletic Conference play.
