The Saugus boys basketball team pulled off a stunner in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division IIAA playoffs. Saugus beat Cypress, the ninth-seeded team in the playoffs, 79-69, in overtime.

Joey Fredrick scored 25 points and had 11 rebounds for Saugus. The game was tied 64-64 at the end of regulation and Saugus outscored Cypress, 15-5, in overtime.

In other first round basketball playoff games, Golden Valley cruised to an 87-43 win over Sierra Vista in the first round of the Division IIIA playoffs. Trevor Wiseman helped Golden Valley build a huge lead, scoring 26 of his game-high 31 points in the first half.

Valencia beat Highland, 70-67, in overtime to advance in the Division IA playoffs. Lonnie Jackson scored 25 points in the game, but had three key assists, one that sent the game into overtime and two others in the extra period, that sealed the victory for Valencia.

The Canyon boys squeaked past Vista del Lago, 58-55. Kris Quant hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Canyon a first-round win in the Division IIAA playoffs.

The West Ranch boys made a first-round exit in the Division IIAA playoffs, losing 75-48, to Compton. Eli Lucas scored 15 points to lead West Ranch.

The Santa Clarita Christian boys rolled, 68-44, over New Harvest Christian in their first round Division VIAA playoff game. Brett Ranhofer scored 24 points for Santa Clarita Christian.

In high school soccer playoffs, the Canyon girls beat Highland, 5-1, in the first round of the Division II playoffs. Canyon scored four goals in the second half and spread out the offense. Nicole Guerrero, Beth Barker, Malaya Cabrera, Jill Russ and Marina Gonzales each scored for Canyon.

The College of the Canyons baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and beat Cerritos College, 11-7. Jeremy Weber hit a grand slam with one out to give COC a dramatic, come-from-behind win. Nico Moreno add a three-run homer in the third inning for COC.

The Clippers were part of a three-way trade that sent Washington’s Antawn Jamison to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Clipper big man Al Thornton to the Wizards.

The Clippers also sent Sebastian Telfair to the Cavaliers in exchange for Drew Gordon. It was the second trade this week for the Clippers, who also sent Marcus Camby to the Portland Trail Blazers.

The new-look Clippers were up to their old losing ways despite the recent roster moves. They lost to the Atlanta Hawks, 110-92. Chris Kaman scored 21 points and had 10 rebounds in an otherwise disappointing effort by the Clippers.

Team USA won three gold medals and bumped its medal count to 14 at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Lindsey Vonn won gold in the women’s downhill skiing event.

Shani Davis won the gold medal and teammate Chad Hedrick won bronze in the 1,000-meter speed skating event.

Snowboarder Shaun White won the gold medal in halfpipe performing his signature Double McTwist 1260. USA teammate Scotty Lago won the bronze.

USA’s 14 medals lead all nations. Germany is second with 10.
