The Saugus, Canyon and Golden Valley boys basketball teams are alive in the CIF playoffs. Saugus pulled off another stunner, beating Sunny Hills, 71-56, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Division IIAA playoffs. But it doesn’t get any easier for Saugus. They face Summit, the top-seeded team in the bracket, on Tuesday.

Canyon rallied from 20 points down and beat Canyon of Anaheim, 77-71, to advance to the quarterfinals of the  Division IIAA playoffs. Coley Apsay scored 15 points and hit three 3-pointers to lead Canyon.

The Golden Valley boys beat Bonita, 74-66, to move into the quarterfinals of the Division IIIA playoffs. Taylor Statham scored 24 points and Trevor Wiseman added 20 for Golden Valley.

The Valencia boys lost their second-round Division IA playoff game, 52-50, to Mission Viejo. Lonnie Jackson finished with 16 points for Valencia.

On the girls side, Canyon pulled out a 62-59 win over El Dorado in the second round of the Division IIAA playoffs. Adriana Dent scored a team-high 19 points and Brooke LeMar scored 18 for Canyon.

The West Ranch girls lost, 76-34, to Brea Olinda, the No. 1 seeded team in the Division IIAA bracket. Erin Ruiz scored a team-high 12 points for West Ranch.

In the CIF soccer playoffs, the Saugus girls, the reigning Division II champs, made a strong statement against Arcadia. Sweeper Kaitlyn Hamersky scored two goals in a 6-1 win in the first round of the Division II playoffs. Serena Smith-Banas, Brittanie Sakajian, Shasta Fisher and Jamie Molacek also scored for Saugus.

The Hart girls won their first-round game, 2-1, over Glendora in the Division II playoffs. Brittani Reddick assisted on both Hart goals. The first was to Kayla Kent, the second to Kelsey Steck.

In NASCAR, Jimmie Johnson won the Sprint Cup Series race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. It was his fifth Cup win at the Fontana track. Kevin Harvick was second, followed by Jeff Burton in third.

In the Winter Olympics, the U.S. men’s hockey team beat host Canada, 5-3. Brian Rafalski scored two goals in the first period and Jamie Langenbrunner scored the eventual game-winner on a power play in the third period.

American skier Bode Miller won the gold medal in the super-combined.

The United States has 24 medals and seven golds to lead all nations in the Winter Olympics. Germany is second with 18 medals and six gold.
