Saugus Football Team Ranked No. 10 In CIF Poll

The Saugus football team cracked the top 10 in the CIF Southern Section Northern Division coaches poll. Saugus is ranked No. 10 after a come-from-behind, 31-20, win over Burroughs of Burbank last week.

khts_sportsThe Canyon and Valencia football teams are also ranked in the top 10 of the Northern Division poll. Canyon comes in at No. 3 and Valencia is No. 5.

The Cowboys open their season against Burroughs of Burbank on Friday night. The Vikings play Sherman Oaks Notre Dame in their season opener.

St. Bonaventure is ranked No. 1 in the Northern Division poll.

The Vasquez football team is ranked sixth in the Northeast Division poll. Bishop Union is the top-ranked team in the Northeast Division.

In cross country, the Saugus girls are ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 poll. The Golden Valley boys are ranked No. 2 in the Division 2 poll.

In high school volleyball, the Canyon girls beat Burbank in five games and won their second match of the season.

The Golden Valley girls lost to Village Christian in three games and dropped to 0-2.

In auto racing, Ron Hornaday Jr. won the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The former Saugus Speedway champ and four-time Truck Series champ won for the second time this season. It was the 49th win of his Truck Series career.

Canyon High graduate Greg Pursley all but wrapped up the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West championship with a third-place finish at Spokane County Raceway in Washington.

Eric Holmes, a three-time West Series champ, won the race at Spokane, his first of the season.

All Pursley needs to do is start the next race at All American Speedway in Roseville to capture his first West Series championship.

In baseball, the Angels lost to the Mariners, 2-1, and lost a game in the American League West standings. The Rangers shut out the Rays, 8-0, and lead the American League West by 3 ½ games over the Angels.
