Saugus Girls Cross Country Team 17th At Nike Cross Nationals Meet

The Saugus girls cross country team capped their season with a 17th-place finish at the Nike Cross Nationals meet in Oregon.

Samantha Ortega was the top runner for Saugus. She completed the course in 20 minutes, 57 seconds and came in 25th place.

Four of the Saugus girls completed the course in less than 23 minutes and three finished in the top 100.

Saugus senior AJ Yarnall, competing as an individual, was 41st in the boys race. He completed the course in 18 minutes, 4 seconds.

Golden Valley’s Chelsea Totten made an impressive showing at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships West Regional at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

She was 46th in the girls 5K seeded race and completed the course in 19 minutes, 47 seconds.

Golden Valley senior Nolan Del Valle was 47th in the boys 5K seeded race. Teammate Brendan Tinoco was 107th in the same race.

The top-10 finishers in each race qualified for the Foot Locker national meet.

In high school basketball, the Valencia girls won the High Five Classic championship game, 54-46, over Agoura.

Kalia Summerlin was selected as the tournament’s Outstanding Offensive Player. Faith Anumba and Talia Roth, her Valencia teammates, were selected to the all-tournament team.

The Trinity boys beat Santa Clarita Christian, 79-55, in the Santa Clarita Christian Tip-Off Tournament.

The Trinity team made nine 3-pointers in the game. Ian Caddow from Trinity scored 13 points, made three 3-pointers and was the tournament MVP.

In college football, the UCLA Bruins will play Baylor in the Holiday Bowl in San Diego on Dec. 27. The Bruins lost to Stanford, 27-24, in the Pac 12 championship game on Friday. It was the second time UCLA lost to Stanford in less than a week.

The USC Trojans are headed to the Sun Bowl in Texas to play Georgia Tech on Dec. 31. USC started the season as the No. 1 ranked team in the nation by the Associated Press and finished with a 7-5 record. Georgia Tech is the only bowl-eligible team with a losing record at 5-6.

In the NBA, the Lakers lost to the visiting Orlando Magic, 113-103, and dropped to 8-9 on the season. The Magic outscored the Lakers, 40-26, in the fourth quarter.

Kobe Bryant scored 34 points and went over the 30-point mark for the seventh time this season.
