Saugus Girls Cross Country Team Wins Mt. SAC Invitational Sweepstakes

khts_sportsThe Saugus girls and Golden Valley boys cross country teams decided to take on the best runners in the 64th annual Mt. SAC invitational and came away with impressive results.

The Saugus girls won the sweepstakes race led by senior Karis Frankian. She won the 3-mile race in 17 minutes, 12 seconds, the third fastest time in school history.

The Saugus girls finished the race in 1 hour, 31 minutes, 4 seconds and four Saugus runners finished in the top 15. In addition to Frankian, Jenay Jauregui was 12th, followed by Katie Huntington in 13th and Jordan McCall in 14th.

The Golden Valley boys finished third in their sweepstakes race. Kristian Martinez led the Grizzlies with a third-place finish in the race in 14 minutes, 50 seconds.

Teammate Juan David Garcia was seventh in 15 minutes, 3 seconds.

The Valencia football team moved up to No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section Northern Division poll after beating Canyon on Friday night.

Canyon, meanwhile, tumbled to No. 6 in the Northern Division poll. Hart, despite losing to Saugus, was ranked No.  8 in the Northern Division top 10.

Westlake, undefeated at 7-0, is the No. 1 team in the Northern Division.

The Golden Valley boys cross country team is ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section Division II poll. The Hart boys are No. 3 and the Saugus boys are No. 6.

The Saugus girls cross country team is No. 2, behind top-ranked Simi Valley, in the Division II poll.

The West Ranch girls tennis team is No. 1 in the Southern Section Division III poll. The Valencia girls are hanging steady at No. 4 in the Division III poll.

In the World Series, the Rangers beat the Cardinals, 4-2, in Game 5. Rangers catcher Mike Napoli hit a two-run double in the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie.

The Rangers lead the series, three games to two. Game 6 is in St. Louis on Wednesday.

In the NHL, the Kings are home for a game against the New Jersey Devils tonight and riding a four-game winning streak.

Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick has recorded three shutouts in a row and became the first player in franchise history with three straight shutouts.

The Devils have lost two games in a row, but beat the Kings in New Jersey on Oct. 13.
