Saugus Girls Cross Country Team Wins September Showdown At Central Park

The Saugus girls cross country team won the September Showdown at Central Park in a race that featured four of the top teams in the state.

Samantha Ortega from Saugus won the race, tying the course record in 17 minutes, 59 seconds. She paced the Centurions over Great Oak, the No. 1 ranked team in California by Dyestat.com and the 2012 CIF Division 1 state champions.

The Saugus girls won the CIF State Division 2 state championship in 2012, its seventh state title in a row.

Sabrina James was fourth and Darby LaPlant was fifth for Saugus in the race.

The Saugus boys finished second to Great Oak in the September Showdown.

In tennis, the Valencia girls won the Division II championship at the California Tennis Classic in Clovis.

The Lady Vikings beat Arroyo Grande, 7-5, in a tiebreaker after the two teams tied 3-3 in the final match.

In high school football, Hart quarterback Brady White was selected as the US Army All-American Bowl High School player of the week.

White tied a school record with seven touchdown passes against Chaminade, the 10th-ranked team in the state by CalHi Sports. White tied the mark set by Kyle Boller in 1998.

The top three teams in the recently released CIF Southern Section Northern Division poll are from the Foothill League.

Hart is No. 1 for the third week in a row after a 55-54 overtime win over Chaminade.

Valencia is No. 2 after winning its season opener against Palmdale, the fifth-ranked team in the Northern Division.

Canyon is No. 3 after winning its home opener against Clovis West, 48-0, on Saturday night.

The West Ranch football team held steady at No. 7 in the Northern Division rankings.

In golf, Valencia High graduate Max Homa led the United States to a 17-9 victory over Great Britain and Ireland in the Walker Cup at the National Golf Links of America in New York.

In baseball, the Dodgers beat the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks, 8-1, and snapped a four-game losing streak.

Juan Uribe hit three home runs, all solo shots. It was the first three home run game of his career. Hanley Ramirez, Adrian Gonzalez and Andre Ethier also homered in the game.

The Dodgers magic number is down to eight to clinch the National League West Division championship.

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks continue their series tonight at Dodger Stadium. Listen to the game on AM 1220, KHTS. First pitch is at 7:10.
