Saugus Girls, Golden Valley Boys Win CIF State Cross Country Titles

khts_sportsTwo high school cross country teams made history at the CIF State meet at Woodward Park in Fresno over the weekend.

The Saugus girls won their sixth CIF state championship in a row. The Golden Valley boys won their first CIF state championship in school history.

No other California high school cross country team, boys or girls, has won six straight state championships.  Saugus won the Division II championship with six runners finishing in the top 30 at the meet.

Karis Frankian led the Saugus girls with a third-place finish in the race, completing the course in 17 minutes, 42 seconds. Jenay Jauregui was 20th in 18 minutes, 26 seconds.

The Saugus winning effort was helped when one of Simi Valley’s runners was disqualified for making contact with Jauregui before crossing the finish line. Simi Valley won the Southern Section Division II championship.

Simi Valley’s Sarah Baxter won the Division II race at the CIF State meet in 17 minutes, 8 seconds.

Two runners from Golden Valley finished in the top 10 of the boys Division II race to pace the Grizzlies to their first CIF state championship.

Juan David Garcia was seventh and Nolan Del Valle was 10th to earn spots on the all-state team and lead Golden Valley.

Kristian Martinez, the team’s top runner for most of the season, was 15th.

The Hart boys, led by Sam Peckham, finished seventh.

The Canyon, Hart and Trinity football teams all lost in the CIF Southern Section football playoffs and were eliminated.

For the second year in a row, Canyon lost to St. Bonaventure in the quarterfinals of the Northern Division playoffs. St. Bonaventure won, 38-17, taking a 21-3 lead at halftime.

Canyon receiver Drew Wolitarsky caught seven passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

Hart lost to top-seeded Westlake, the No. 1 ranked team in the state, 42-14, at College of the Canyons.

Hart’s sophomore quarterback Connor Wingenroth threw for 255 yards and scored a rushing touchdown. But he threw two interceptions and lost a fumble.

The Trinity Classical Academy football team lost to Cuyama Valley, 52-32, in the semifinals of the Southern Section Division II 8-man playoffs.

In hockey, the Kings are home tonight for a game against the San Jose Sharks. The Kings have lost three of their past four games including 2-1 to the Blackhawks on Saturday night at Staples Center.
