Saugus Softball Team Rallies To Beat Valencia

The Saugus softball team handed Valencia its first Foothill League loss of the year and did it in extra innings on Tuesday. Each team scored four runs in the seventh inning. Saugus won the game, 5-4, in the bottom of the eighth.

Randi Josett scored the winning run for Saugus on an errant pick off throw. Sara Shier and Jackie Shimamoto each homered in the seventh inning to spark the Saugus rally.

Valencia’s Amy Moore drove in two runs and Lauren Boser was 2-for-4 and scored a run.

Canyon’s Danielle Sullivan hit a three-run home run in a 6-3 win over West Ranch. Brittany Williams and McKenna Smith also homered for Canyon.

The Hart softball team shut out Golden Valley 13-0 behind a one-hitter from Destiny Rodino.

The Santa Clarita Christian softball team scored enough runs to rival the football team against L.A. Lutheran. Christine Kash hit a grand slam and drove in seven runs for Santa Clarita Christian in a 28-11 rout of L.A. Lutheran. Amanda Mothershead had two hits and scored five runs.

In high school baseball, West Ranch, the first-place team in the Foothill League, hosts Canyon. Valencia is at Golden Valley and Hart is at Saugus. All games start at 3:15.

In college softball, College of the Canyons will face Saddleback College in the California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regional playoffs on Saturday. COC, the co-champions of the Western State Conference, earned the No. 9 seed in the playoffs. Saddleback College is the No. 8 seed. The first game of the best-of-three series is at Saddleback College and starts at 7.

In high school volleyball, Valencia swept Saugus in three games and extended its Foothill League match winning streak to 79. The Canyon boys swept West Ranch in three games and the Hart boys downed Golden Valley in three games.

In high school golf, West Ranch won the first round of the Newhall Cup, played at the TPC at Valencia, by 10 strokes. West Ranch’s Colin Wheeler and Valencia’s Jonathan Chang each shot 3-under par 69s, the low rounds of the match. The Newhall Cup concludes today at TPC.

In high school tennis, West Ranch beat Canyon, 14-4. Hart beat Golden Valley, 13-5.

In high school swimming, the Valencia boys beat Canyon, 122-48. Stephen Haw was a double winner for Valencia. He won the 200 and 500 freestyle events. The Canyon girls beat Valencia, 98-72. Canyon’s Kirsten Justice won two events, the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly. Kearsten Livingstone was a double winner for Canyon, the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.
