khts_sportsIt was a case of better late than never for the Saugus softball team in the wild-card round of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs. Saugus scored six runs in the seventh inning and beat Roosevelt, 7-1, to advance in the playoffs.

Jenna Kelly hit a grand slam in the seventh to give her team a 5-1 lead. Saugus added two more runs in the inning.

Saugus starter Cassie Herrera tossed a complete game six-hitter with six strikeouts. Saugus will play fourth-seeded Simi Valley in the first round of the playoffs on Thursday.

It wasn’t such good news for the Foothill League baseball teams in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

Saugus lost to Thousand Oaks, 3-0, and Hart lost to St. John Bosco, 3-1.

Thousand Oaks start Cody Thomson pitched a complete game, four-hitter and struck out 11. He also hit two home runs and drove in all three runs for his team.

Justin Sheehan got two of his team’s four hits, including a double and was walked once.

Hart ran into a tough pitcher in their game against St. John Bosco. Starter Koby Gauna held Hart scoreless for four innings and allowed only five baserunners.

Hart scored its only run of the game in the fifth inning on an RBI single by J.T. Barnes that scored Baggio Saldivar.

In high school swimming, West Ranch’s Riley Mita and Canyon’s Keaunui Harris shined at the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet in Long Beach.

Mita finished second in the 500 freestyle and Harris set a school record, finishing third in the 100 breaststroke.

Mita added a sixth-place finish in the 200 freestyle.

Harris recorded a time of 52.06 seconds in the 100 breaststroke.

The Lakers are preparing for Game 2 of the NBA Western Conference finals against the Phoenix Suns, but center Andrew Bynum did not practice on Tuesday.

Bynum scored four points and had four rebounds in the Lakers’ Game 1 win over the Suns. He has been nursing an injured knee, but said he will be ready for tonight’s game.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6 at Staples Center.

Meanwhile, the Clippers made their seemingly annual excursion in the NBA draft lottery. They got the No. 8 pick in the next draft. The Washington Wizards were the surprise winners of the lottery, earning the top pick.

The Dodgers beat the Houston Astros, 6-3, and completed the two-game sweep at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers have won nine games in a row and are a game out of first place.

The Dodgers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Manny Ramirez, James Loney and Casey Blake each drove in two runs for the Dodgers.

The first-place Padres are in town for a two-game series starting tonight. Ramon Ortiz gets the start for the Dodgers against Jon Garland for the Padres. Pregame starts at 6:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
