Saugus Sophomore Abbey Weitzeil Wins Two CIF Swim Titles

Saugus sophomore Abbey Weitzeil won two CIF Southern Section Division 1 individual titles in record-breaking style at the Riverside Aquatics Complex.

She won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.25 seconds, a Southern Section Division 1 record. Her time was 0.01 seconds off the state record and the fourth fastest time in the country according to the National Federation of State High School Association.

Weitzeil also won the 100-yard freestyle race in 49.01 seconds, another Southern Section Division 1 record. She lowered her time to 48.83 seconds in the opening leg in the 4×100 relay.

The Saugus girls swim team was ninth at the Southern Section Division 1 finals. The Hart girls swim team finished a spot ahead of Saugus in eighth place.

The Saugus boys were 17th and the Hart boys were 20th.

In high school tennis, the Valencia boys beat Temple City, 12-6, and moved on to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs.

Valencia’s No. 1 doubles team of David Myers and Sam Rebele swept their sets, 6-4, 6-1, 6-0.

The Hart boys lost in the second round to San Marino, 18-0. San Marino is the top-seeded team in the Division 2 playoffs and improved to 16-0. Hart ends its season at 14-7.

In college baseball, The Master’s College beat San Diego Christian, 11-7, in the championship game of the opening round of the NAIA national championship tournament.

The Mustangs are headed to the NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho for the first time since 2000.

The College of the Canyons baseball team lost to Cypress College, 5-4, and was eliminated from the California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Super Regional.

In college softball, the College of the Canyons was knocked out of the Southern California Super Regional after losing two games to Riverside City College. The Lady Cougars lost the first game, 11-1, and the second game, 10-0.

In baseball, the Dodgers beat the Miami Marlins, 5-3, and have a little two-game winning streak.

Chris Capuano won his first game of the season giving up one run on five hits in 6 1/3 innings.

The Dodgers welcome the Washington Nationals to the Ravine tonight. It will be Josh Beckett for the Dodgers against Jordan Zimmermann for the Nationals.
