Saugus Sweeps Simi Valley In Wild-Card Round Of CIF Girls Volleyball Playoffs

The Saugus girls volleyball team advanced in the CIF Southern Section Division IA playoffs by sweeping Simi Valley in the wild-card round.

Hannah Nua had a team-high 23 kills in the match for Saugus. Ashley Guthrie recorded 31 assists.

The Centurions will play La Salle, the No. 2 seeded team in the Division IA playoffs, tonight.

In other playoff matches, Valencia hosts Flintridge Sacred Heart, Hart is home against Moorpark and West Ranch travels to play Louisville.

In high school tennis, the Valencia girls lost to Laguna Beach, 12-6, in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division II playoffs.

In college golf, the College of the Canyons women are in fifth place at the California Community College Athletic Association Southern Regional Championship at San Luis Rey Downs Resort.

COC’s Kristin Grimes shot a 1-under 71 on the first day of the tournament and leads the field.

Irvine Valley College leads the Southern Regional Championship with a team score of 311. COC is 24 shots back at 335.

In college cross country, The Master’s College men won the Golden State Athletic Conference championship for the third year in a row.

The Master’s College’s John Gilbertson won his sixth race of the season at the course at Irvine Park. He completed the 8K course in 24 minutes, 22.4 seconds.

The Master’s College women finished in fourth place at the conference championships. Hannah Kellerman was the highest finishing runner for the Lady Mustangs. She was second in the 5K race in 18 minutes, 1.5 seconds.

The Master’s College men earned at automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship meet in Vancouver, Wash., on Nov. 17.

In college basketball, The Master’s College men upset Grand Canyon University, 63-58, in Phoenix, Ariz.

Grand Canyon, a NCAA Division II school, led by two points at halftime. Leif Karlberg scored a team-high 18 points for The Master’s College.

In the NBA, the Clippers lost to the visiting Cleveland Cavaliers, 108-101, at Staples Center. It was the second loss in a row for the Clippers.
