Saugus Swimmer Abbey Weitzeil Sets Two Records

Saugus High junior Abbey Weitzeil posted a pair of record-setting performances at the Speedo Winter Junior National Championships in North Carolina.

Swimming for the Canyons Aquatics Club, Weitzeil set the meet records in the 50-meter and 100-freestyle events.

She won both races. She set the meet record in the 50 free in 22.02 seconds in the preliminaries. She won the 100 free by setting the meet record in 47.78 seconds.

The Canyons Aquatics Club finished fifth overall as a team.

Weitzeil also swam on the 200 medley relay team, the 400 freestyle relay team, the 200 freestyle relay team and the 400 medley relay team. The Canyons Aquatics Club finished in the top 10 in all four relay races.

Valencia freshman Nikol Popov was 11th in the 100 breaststroke. Hart’s Mik Ranslem was 19th in the 200 butterfly and Tamara Santoyo was 24th in the 100 butterfly.

On the boys side, Hart’s Cole Cogswell was ninth in the 100 freestyle and 17th in the 50 freestyle. Valencia’s Jessie Kim was 11th in the 200 backstroke.

In high school basketball, the Saugus boys beat Oak Park, 66-65 in overtime.

The Trinity Classical Academy girls lost to Milken Community, 71-36.

In high school soccer, the Golden Valley girls lost to Simi Valley, 6-0.

Los Angeles Sports Report

In the NBA, the Clippers beat the New Orleans Pelicans, 108-95, and won their third game in a row. Next up for the Clippers are the Denver Nuggets on Saturday night.

In the NHL, the Kings take on the visiting San Jose Sharks tonight at Staples Center. The Kings are coming off a 3-0 shutout over the Edmonton Oilers.

Listen to the game between the Kings and the Sharks tonight on AM 1220, KHTS. The puck drops at 7:30.
