Saugus, West Ranch Softball Teams Play For High Desert Classic Championship

khts_sportsThe Saugus and West Ranch softball teams will meet in the championship game of the High Desert Classic in Lancaster today.

Saugus beat Oak Hills, 3-2, and Highland, 5-3, to reach the championship game. Karlee Bickford drove in two runs for Saugus against Oak Hills.

Ashley Butera and Sara Shier each homered in the game against Highland.

West Ranch beat Quartz Hill, 3-0, and Serrano, 14-2, to reach the championship game. Kylie Sorenson hit a two-run home run and was 3-for-3 in the game against Quartz Hill. West Ranch hit four home runs against Serrano. Janelle Lindvall was 3-for-4 with a triple and a home run.

The Golden Valley softball team reached the consolation championship of the High Desert Classic with a 6-4 win over Granite Hills. Alyssa Rocha was 3-for-3 for Golden Valley.

Golden Valley lost to Burroughs of Ridgecrest, 7-3, in its first game of the High Desert Classic.

The Hart, Saugus and Valencia baseball teams opened Foothill League play with wins. Hart starter Garrett Gooding had the most impressive league opener, tossing a one-hitter against Golden Valley.

Gooding struck out 12 in a 6-0 shutout over Golden Valley. Anthony St. Thomas got the only hit off a Gooding, a seeing-eye single through the left side of the infield.

Luke Persico drove in a run with a double in the first inning. Alex Tenorio knocked in a run with a single to give Hart a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Valencia hit five home runs and beat Canyon, 12-2. A.J. Balta hit two home runs, his first a two-run shot in the first inning. He added a solo home run in the second inning.

Alex Bishop hit a two-run home run and drove in three runs. Shane Zeile and Quincy Quintero also homered for Valencia later in the game.

Saugus beat a highly touted West Ranch team, 8-6. Sophomore Dylan Freyre had a big game for Saugus. He had three hits, including a three-run home run in the fifth inning. Justin Sheehan also hit a three-run home run in the third inning.

Dakota Hernandez and CJ Cloney hit back-to-back home runs for West Ranch in the fourth inning. Josh Heinz added a two-run homer in the fifth inning.

The West Ranch boys golf team beat Granada Hills by 39 strokes at the Wilson Golf Course at Griffith Park. Brandon Dooley shot a 3-over par 75 to lead West Ranch. Joey Downey and Casey May each shot 7-over par 79s.

The College of the Canyons baseball team beat LA Valley College, 9-4, and snapped a four-game losing streak.

COC scored six runs in the seventh inning to rally for the win. Juan Perez delivered the big blow in the inning with a two-run double.

The Master’s College split a doubleheader with Concordia and snapped a seven-game losing streak. The Master’s College lost the first game, 17-11, but won the second game, 6-5, in seven innings.

JT Adams and Cody Harris each drove in two runs for The Master’s College in the second game.

The Lakers started life without Andrew Bynum. He was suspended by the NBA for two games as punishment for fouling Michael Beasley of the Minnesota Timberwolves hard on Friday night.

Bynum missed the Lakers game against the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday. He will also miss the Tuesday’s game against the Phoenix Suns.

Without Bynum, the Lakers beat the Trail Blazers, 84-80. Lamar Odom recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Kobe Bryant had 22 points.

The Dodgers beat the Chicago White Sox, 9-7, and hit three home runs. Matt Kemp hits his fourth home run of spring training, a two-run shot in the sixth inning. Corey Smith and Jaimie Pedroza each homered in the eighth inning for the Dodgers.

The Kings are home tonight for a game against the Caglary Flames. The Kings are coming off a 2-1 overtime loss to the Ducks on Saturday.
