Shipman Making Contributions To U.S. Junior National Softball Team

khts_sportsValencia High graduate Madison Shipman has been contributing nicely on the U.S. Junior National softball team in the 18-and-under Pan-American Championships in Colombia.

Shipman has started three games, at shortstop and first base, has scored three runs, driven in three runs and stolen two bases. She has two sacrifice flies and has one hit in three at-bats.

The U.S. team beat Argentina, 7-0, on Sunday with Shipman knocking in a run with a sacrifice fly to give her team a 3-0 lead. She also stole a base in the game.

In golf, Nick Delio, a Saugus High graduate and senior at Cal State Northridge, won the Southern California Golf Association Match Play Championship at Sandpiper Golf Club in Santa Barbara for the second year in a row.

Delio defeated Jack Perry from Santa Barbara, 3 and 2, on Wednesday. Delio, the sixth-seeded player in the tournament, won his opening match in the 32-player field on Monday. He won two matches on Tuesday and another two on Wednesday.

On the women’s side, Valencia High sophomore Alison Lee missed the cut for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at Charlotte Country Club in North Carolina.

She shot 17-over 165 in the first two rounds of the tournament.

In college football, highly touted USC freshman running back Dillon Baxter has been suspended for one game by coach Lane Kiffin for violating team rules. Baxter will miss the USC season opener against Hawaii on Sept. 2.

Kiffin did not specify what rule Baxter broke. Kiffin has described Baxter as one of the most skilled players on the USC roster. He was expected to play tailback and return kicks.

The Dodger bats went quiet again in a 2-0 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. The big story of the game was that Dodger manager Joe Torre benched Matt Kemp in favor of hot-hitting Jay Gibbons. Gibbons went 0-for-4 with a strikeout, but he wasn’t the only Dodger who struggled against Phillies starter Roy Oswalt.

Oswalt pitched seven shutout innings and gave up only five hits. Scott Podsednik had three hits, but he was the only player to muster any offense for the Dodgers.

The Dodgers were shut out for the 12th time this season.

The Dodgers conclude their three-game series with the Phillies tonight. It will be Clayton Kershaw for the Dodgers against Joe Blanton for the Phillies. Pregame starts at 3:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
