Six Cross Country Teams Qualify For CIF Southern Section Finals

The cross country teams from the Foothill League performed extremely well at the CIF Southern Section prelims at Mt. San Antonio College.

Six teams, three boys and three girls, qualified for the Southern Section Finals on Saturday. The Saugus, Golden Valley and Hart boys will compete in the Division II meet.

On the girls side, Saugus, Golden Valley and Canyon will run in the Division II meet.

Valencia’s Olivia Pear was third in the Division I preliminary race, good enough to earn a spot in the finals.

The top four teams in each preliminary heat race qualified for the finals.

The Saugus girls team is ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section Division II poll. They won their heat race behind a second-place finish by Samantha Ortega. The Golden Valley girls were second.

The Canyon girls were fourth in their heat race.

The Golden Valley boys, the reigning Division II and state champions, were fourth in their heat race.

Nolan Del Valle finished fifth in his race in a personal-best 15 minutes, 16 seconds.

In college volleyball, The Master’s College women earned a bye in the first round of the NAIA National Championship Tournament.

The Lady Mustangs are ranked No. 6 in the NAIA. They are one of 12 teams in the tournament with a first-round bye.

The Master’s College women are making their first appearance in the NAIA National Championship Tournament. There will be plenty of familiar faces in their first trip though. Five teams from the Golden State Athletic Conference qualified for the NAIA tournament.

In college basketball, The Master’s College women are off to a 3-0 start after a 69-66 win over Montana Western in the Westminster Fall Classic in Salt Lake City.

The Master’s College men are also 3-0 after beating West Coast Baptist, 84-77.

In the NBA, the Mike D’Antoni era begins as the Lakers take on the San Antonio Spurs at Staples Center tonight.

The Lakers have won two games in a row since firing Mike Brown. D’Antoni, however, might not be on the Lakers sidelines until Friday night against the Phoenix Suns.
