The Foothill League will be well-represented in the CIF Southern Section cross country finals. Six teams and Golden Valley’s Chelsey Totten qualified for the Division II final at Mt. San Antonio College next week.

The Valencia girls squeaked in after tying with Capistrano Valley for the last qualifying spot to advance to the finals. Prelim meet officials decided to take both teams, Valencia and Capistrano Valley.

The Saugus girls won their heat with five runners finishing in the top 12. Heidi Hoslet was the top runner from Saugus and was sixth in 17 minutes, 20 seconds.

The Canyon girls finished in fourth place in the same heat as Saugus. Madison Hills paced Canyon with a 10^th-place finish in 17 minutes, 28 seconds.

Totten, the top runner from Golden Valley, was fourth in her heat and will compete in the Division II final as an individual runner. She completed the course in 16 minutes, 53 seconds.

The Golden Valley boys were first in their heat in the Division II preliminaries. The Hart and Saugus boys teams also qualified for the Division II finals. The Saugus boys won the Southern Section Division II championship last year.

In high school tennis, the Valencia girls advanced to the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division 3 playoffs with a 13-5 win over Upland.

The Vikings No. 1 doubles team of Michelle Savage and Shenelle Trujillo swept their sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.

The Hart girls tennis team is still alive in the Division 3 playoffs with a 71-65 win in games over Martin Luther King. The Indians tied with King, 9-9, on sets. Hart moves on to the quarterfinals.

West Ranch, the top-seeded team in the Division 3 girls tennis playoffs, also advanced to the quarters with a 10-8 win over Santiago.

In college soccer, the College of the Canyons women’s team shut out Santa Monica College, 1-0, and won the Western State Conference, Southern Division championship.

COC’s Casey Wesley scored the lone goal of the game in the 83^rd minute and the Cougars won their first conference championship since2004.

In baseball, the hot stove league is heating up even if the Dodgers have yet to enter the free agent market. The Dodgers and all-star outfielder Matt Kemp are close to a reported eight-year, $160 million deal.

Kemp looks like he’s at least one player who will be in Dodger blue for a while.
