Starr Brothers Power Santa Clarita Christian To Second Round Of CIF State Division 5 Tournament

Jordan and Caden Starr combined for 34 of the Cardinals 70 points to lead No. 1 SCCS to a 70-52 win over No. 16 Corcoran.

Another day, another double-digit victory for the Santa Clarita Christian Cardinals (22-9). They’ve had 13 such wins on their current 15-game winning streak that has spanned an undefeated Heritage League campaign, CIF Division 5AAA title run, and now an opening round win in the CIF State Division V tournament.

Wednesday, the Cardinals flexed as the top seed from Southern California in front of a raucous home crowd at The Master’s University’s Bross Court.

“It feels great, it’s good–we’re on a roll, we’re playing hard, we’re playing together and we’re just gonna keep moving forward and keep locking down,” said senior captain Jordan Starr after the win.

The older Starr brother had a game-high 18 points to go along with 8 rebounds and 5 assists. He did most of his damage in the second half, scoring 12 points after the break to pace the Cardinals. His younger brother took care of things in the first half.

Caden Starr helped the Cardinals build their lead by setting the tone in the first quarter. Starr controlled the paint, scoring nine of his 16 points in the first eight minutes of the game.

“It feels good to keep winning like this, and hopefully we can keep it going and win State,” said the 6’7″ sophomore following his performance.

Things got a little shaky in the third quarter when Corcoran made a run to cut the SCCS lead to nine, but the Cardinals stepped on the gas in the fourth quarter to close the game strong. Santa Clarita Christian outscored Corcoran 20-13 over the final eight minutes of the game.

“We feel like we had to kind of grind this game out a little bit, but we know it’s not gonna always be pretty,” spoke head coach James Mosley after the fifteenth straight win.

“We’re committed to defending, whoever we play next will be very skilled offensively. It all starts with defense, we feel like we’re going to find ways to score because we’re an unselfish team and so we just go back and we lock in on our opponent, work and defend.”

Up next for No. 1 Santa Clarita Christian is No. 9 South East (17-7). The game is scheduled for Saturday at The Master’s University with tip-off time still to be determined.
