The Best Team You Never Knew In The SCV

Lady Centurions Have Run To The Top And Keep Going Back.

At Saugus High School it’s a compliment when someone tells you, “You run like a girl,” especially after the Lady Centurion's last two seasons under Coach Rene Paragas.

For a second straight year the Saugus High School Girl’s Cross Country team won the CIF Division I State Championship and finished second in the Nation at the Nike Team Nationals in Portland, Oregon!

These girls have shown the competition that they aren’t only the best team around, but they finished the 2007 season with a mark of being the one of the finest teams Santa Clarita has ever produced.   In the State Championship Meet, all five of the Centurion's scoring runners finished in the top 20, and set course records at Woodward Park, Crescenta Valley Park, and the notorious Mount Sac.

The dominance of the Varsity team has bled into the JV team, who also won the "JV National Championships" at Mt. Sac this season.

The Varsity Team Captains are Keri Molt (11) and Katie Dunn (12), who is also an All-American.  The other All-American is Kaylin Mahoney (9), who was also rated the best freshman in the nation.  Anne Randall was also honored as an All-CIF runner and the team had three other girls named to the All-League Team: Brianna Jauregui (11), Nina Moore (12), and Amber Murakami (10).  The other girls who added depth and upperclassman leadership were Michelle Bonja (12), Courtney Wilson (11), Toccoa Kahovec (12).

For those of you who don't know about cross country rules, the teams are allotted seven runners in a race but only five can score for points.  The Saugus Centurions had six girls this season who received “All-League” honors.  That means that one of the “All-League” Runners for the team didn’t even score in their races. On other teams, the “All-League” runner is usually the best on the team.

In conclusion, the Saugus Girls Cross Country Team shouldn’t go underrated or underappreciated, because they proudly represent the Santa Clarita Valley, and they do so consistently on a national stage. This may be one of the most prestigious moments in SCV Sports history.
