The Master’s College Runner Anthony Pizzo Qualifies For NAIA Nationals

khts_sportsThe Master’s College runner Anthony Pizzo finished fourth in the 5,000 meters in the Ben Brown Invitational at Cal State Fullerton over the weekend and qualified for the NAIA National Championships.

The Canyon High graduate finished in 14 minutes, 18.56 seconds, a school record. It was the fastest time in the 5,000 recorded by a runner in the NAIA this year.

Ammar Moussa, a senior at Arcadia High School, won the 5,000-meter race.

Golden Valley graduate Seth Totten, running for UC Riverside, was eighth in the 5,000-meter race.

The Master’s College baseball team split a doubleheader with Vanguard College. The Master’s College lost the first game, 5-1, but won the nightcap, 5-3.

Joe Riddle and Ben Ives each drove in two runs against Vanguard in the second game. Ives was 2-for-3 and drove in the only run for The Master’s College in the first game.

The College of the Canyons men’s golf team won the fourth Western State Conference tournament by two strokes and improved to 24-0.

COC shot 380 as a team at the Santa Maria Country Club. Allan Hancock was second at 382.

James Holley shot a 1-over par 73 to lead COC. Alex Macaluso, Derek Larson and Ruben Carmona each shot 4-over par 76.

The West Ranch boys golf team beat Lancaster by 14 strokes at Rancho Vista Golf Course in Palmdale. The West Ranch boys shot 206. Joey Downey had the low round at 37 in nine holes.

In high school tennis, the Valencia boys team went 3-2 in the California Classic over the weekend. The Vikings had wins over Concord De La Salle, Redwood and Jesuit and lost to Granite Bay and Los Altos.

Valencia followed the California Classic with a win over Granada Hills, 16-2. The No. 2 doubles team of David Myers and Tom Ellery swept their sets.

The Saugus boys tennis team beat Quartz Hill, 13-5. The No. 1 doubles team of Josh Hill and Kevin Okimoto swept their sets. The three Saugus doubles teams won eight of the nine sets.

The Lakers are on the second stop of a pivotal four-game road trip tonight in Atlanta against the Hawks. The Lakers have won seven games in a row, including a one-sided affair against the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday.

The Lakers will meet the Dallas Mavericks and the Miami Heat before returning home on Monday against the Orlando Magic.

The way the Lakers have been playing lately, about the only thing that might slow them down is jet lag.

The Hawks have lost three of their past four games, including a 13-point setback to the New York Knicks on Sunday.

The Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies, 7-1, in spring training in Arizona. Dodger starter Ted Lilly pitched into the fourth inning and gave up one run on three hits.

Tim Redding pitched three shutout innings to earn the win for the Dodgers.

Jerry Sands continued his hot streak in the Cactus League with a three-run homer in the seventh inning. He was 2-for-2 with a triple.

The Kings lost to the visiting Dallas Stars, 4-3 in overtime. Brenden Morrow scored the game-winner 38 seconds into the overtime period.

Justin Williams had a goal and assist for the Kings. Anze Kopitar notched two assists in the game.

The Kings start a four-game road trip in Detroit against the Red Wings on Wednesday.
