The Master’s College Women’s Soccer Team Posts Pair Of Shutouts

khts_sportsThe Master’s College women’s soccer team is living up to the hype. The 22nd ranked team in the NAIA moved up a spot in the national rankings and posted a pair of 5-0 shutouts over the weekend.

The Master’s College beat the College of St. Mary from Nebraska and William Jessup from Northern California.

Alissa Adkins had a goal and an assist in The Master’s College’s win over the College of St. Mary.

Emily Bruton scored two goals in her team’s win over William Jessup.

The Master’s College women are back in action today against Cal State San Marcos.

The Master’s College men, on the other hand, are in search of their first win of the season. After being ranked No. 2 in the NAIA preseason poll, The Master’s College men dropped to 22nd after starting the season 0-1-1.

The Master’s College men also play Cal State San Marcos today.

The College of the Canyons men’s soccer team beat Taft, 2-1. Andres Bueno and Jesus Salazar each scored first half goals to give COC a 2-0 lead at halftime. Edgar Plascencia scored an unassisted goal in the second half for Taft.

COC has won its first three games and is undefeated. The next game for COC is Friday against Santa Rosa.

In college football, the College of the Canyons beat Antelope Valley College, 35-7, in the season opener for both teams.

Saugus High graduate Ryan Zirbel rushed for 68 yards on 15 carries and scored a touchdown. He also caught five passes for 58 yards.

COC jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and had a 28-7 lead at halftime.

Quarterback Justin Arias threw for 358 yards and two touchdowns for COC.

In college cross country, Saugus High graduate Shannon Murakami earned UCLA athlete of the week honors for her performance in the Cal State Fullerton season opener. The senior runner led UCLA to the team title and won the race in 21 minutes, 24.5 seconds. She was nearly 30 seconds faster than the second-place finisher, UCLA teammate Melissa Skiba.

In high school golf, the Hart girls beat Quartz Hill, 413-529, in a non-league match at Rancho Vista. Hart’s Nikki Prichard led all golfers with a 6-over par 78.

The Golden Valley girls golf team remained undefeated, finishing in a tie with Alemany at the El Cariso Golf Course in Sylmar. Golden Valley and Alemany each shot 245, four strokes ahead of Burbank. Amanda Hobbs shot a team-best 9-over par, 40, for Golden Valley, 3-0-1 after four matches.

The Valencia girls golf team won a match against Calabasas and Westlake at the Westlake Golf Course. Valencia shot 227, five shots better than Calabasas and eight shots better than Westlake in a tight match. Allie Jin led Valencia with a 9-over 43.

The Dodgers lost to the San Diego Padres, 2-1. The Dodgers are in the midst of a four-game losing streak and have lost six of their past seven games.

The first-place Padres have won two in a row after losing 10 straight before the Dodgers came to town on Monday.

The Dodgers and Padres conclude their three-game series tonight. It will be Chad Billingsley for the Dodgers against Cory Luebke for the Padres. Pregame starts at 6:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.
