The Master’s University Basketball Teams Sweep Vanguard At Home – Santa Clarita Sports Report – January 26, 2018

Both Mustangs men’s and women’s teams made huge waves Thursday night on Bross Court. TMU women earned their biggest win of the season over NAIA No. 2 Vanguard, and TMU men broke a 23-year-old program record for consecutive wins with their 19th in a row.

Women’s Basketball: Golden State Athletic Conference basketball is as tough as it gets in NAIA conferences, and the Lady Mustangs have surely experienced the up and downs of conference ball this year. Saturday, TMU fell to No. 12 Westmont in a hotly contested 62-56 game.

Which made Thursday’s matchup with the second best team in the country all the more important. At 2-3, the Mustangs (13-5, 3-3) needed an reinvigorating performance. Leave it to sophomore Hannah Forrar to deliver a career-best scoring outburst to lead the Mustangs to a 75-62 victory over No. 2 Vanguard (only the Lions second loss of the season).

Forrar scored 34 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field, a perfect 4-for-4 from 3-point range and 14 made free throws.

Saturday, the Mustangs will have an opportunity to climb above .500 in conference play when Hope International comes to town. Tip-off is at 5:30.

Men’s Basketball: The 1994-95 Master’s University Mustangs won 18 games in a row. That team advanced all the way to the NAIA Elite 8.

Twenty-three years later, the 2017-18 Mustangs have reached 19 wins in a row, snapping the all-time record. No. 4 TMU outlasted Vanguard, 86-79, another in the line of GSAC teams giving the Mustangs their best shot.

Going in to GSAC play it was pivotal the Mustangs (20-1, 6-0) not slip up in the first half of the conference season with five of seven on the road late in the season. A perfect 6-for-6 so far, the next one might be the biggest of the season when No. 7 Hope International (19-2, 5-1) visits Bross. The Royals 17-game streak was snapped Thursday night at Westmont in a thrilling 88-84 double overtime game.

A win Saturday would push the Mustangs two games ahead of Hope International. Tip-off is at 7:30, and be sure to follow us on Twitter @KHTSSports for complete coverage of the NAIA top ten showdown.
