Thirkettle Wins NASCAR Super Late Model Race at Irwindale

news_sportsTravis Thirkettle of Fillmore won the NASCAR Super Late Model season finale race at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on Saturday night. It was his first win of the season and his first win since the Toyota All Star Showdown in January.

Thirkettle won the abbreviated Showdown race that was cut short because of rain. He went winless in the first 20 Super Late Model races at Irwindale before finally breaking through on the final regular season race of the year.

It was a night of twin races in the Super Late Model division. Rip Michels, a driver from San Fernando, won the first Super Late Model race. It was his third win of the season and his 60th career win at the track. He has more wins than any other driver at Irwindale.

Thirkettle was the runner-up in the first Super Late Model race.

Nick Joanides, a driver from Woodland Hills, posted a pair of top-fives and won the Super Late Model championship at the track. He was fifth in the first race, second in the second race, and won the Super Late Model championship at Irwindale for the second year in a row.

In the Legend Cars, Mark Borchetta of Valencia finished 12th, Cale Kanke of Frazier Park was 13th and Kenny Maler Jr. of Acton was 28th. Rookie Dallas Montes of Bakersfield won the Legend Cars race, his fourth in a row.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
