Three Women Runners From SCV Win USA Outdoor Track And Field Championmships

khts_sportsA trio of women from the Santa Clarita Valley won national titles at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships over the weekend.

Canyon High graduates Alysia Johnson and Lauren Fleshman, and Santa Clarita’s Allyson Felix, were winners at the outdoor track and field national championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

Johnson, a graduate of UC Berkeley and running for Team Nike, won the 800 in 1 minute, 59.87 seconds on Sunday. Fleshman won the 5,000-meter run and won her second career outdoor national championship in the event.

Running for the Nike Oregon Track Club, Fleshman, a Stanford graduate, won the race in 15 minutes, 28.70 seconds. She also won the 5,000 in 2006.

Felix, a Santa Clarita resident, graduarte of USC and a two-time Olympic silver medalist, won the 100-meter race at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. It was her fifth outdoor national championship.

In the College World Series, UCLA is in the championship round against South Carolina thanks to the arm of Hart High graduate Trevor Bauer.

Bauer struck out 13 batters in a 10-3 win over Texas Christian University to advance to the championship series.

The sophomore right-hander gave up four hits in eight innings. He leads the nation with 165 strikeouts. Against Florida State in the College World Series opener, Bauer struck out 11 in seven innings in an 11-3 win.

In auto racing, Gerrit Cromsigt of Saugus won the NASCAR Super Stocks race at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on Saturday night. It was his second win in a row in the Super Stocks.

Rich DeLong III of Santa Clarita finished second and increased his lead in the Super Stocks standings to 24 points.

Canyon Country’s R.J. Johnson finished third in the NASCAR Late Model race at Irwindale. Nick Joanides of Woodland Hills won the race and increased his lead in the Late Model standings to six points over Johnson.

When Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton comes in the game, it usually means a win. But not last night. The visiting Yankees scored six runs in the final two innings and beat the Dodgers, 8-6.

Broxton coughed up four runs in the top of the ninth and ruined a gem by starter Clayton Kershaw. The Yankees tied the game, 6-6, in the ninth inning and went on to win the game on a two-run home run by Robinson Cano off George Sherrill in the 10th.

The Dodgers had a 5-0 lead behind seven strong innings from Kershaw. He gave up only four hits, striking out five and walking none.

The Dodgers have lost eight of their last 10 games and are five games behind the National League West leading San Diego Padres.

The Dodgers head north to start at three-game series with the San Francisco Giants. It will be Chad Billingsley for the Dodgers against Barry Zito for the Giants. Pregame starts at 6:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
