UCLA Swept By South Carolina In College World Series

khts_sportsThe UCLA Bruins lost the College World Series after being swept by South Carolina in Omaha, Neb.

The Bruins had a 1-0 lead in Game 2 of the best-of-three series, but South Carolina tied the game in the eighth inning and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 11th.

Hart High graduate Trevor Brown, who started Game 2 at third base, was 2-for-4 and scored a run. He singled in the ninth inning and helped the Bruins load the bases, but UCLA failed to score.

He singled in the fifth inning and came around to score to give UCLA its 1-0 lead.

South Carolina reliever Matt Price earned the victory pitching the final 2 2/3 innings. He gave up only one hit, Brown’s single in the ninth, and struck out three.

Whit Merrifield knocked in the winning run with a one-out RBI single in the 11th inning.

For South Carolina, it was the first baseball national championship in school history. It was the first College World Series championship to be decided in extra innings since 1970, when the University of Southern California beat Florida State, 2-1, in 15 innings.

For UCLA, the sixth-seeded team in the College World Series, the loss gave the Bruins a 51-17 record.

In women’s soccer, the Santa Clarita Blue Heat finished its road trip to Colorado with a pair of 2-0 losses.

The Blue Heat lost to the Colorado Rush, 2-0, and followed with a 2-0 loss to the Colorado Force.

The Blue Heat is 0-4-1 in the United Soccer League W-League Western Conference. The team’s next game is Saturday against the Colorado Force at College of the Canyons.

The Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants for the second time in a row, but it wasn’t all good news from the Bay Area.

James Loney was 2-for-3 and drove in three runs for the Dodgers. His two-run single in the fifth capped a three-run inning and gave his team a 4-1 lead.

But Manny Ramirez hurt his hamstring trying to get back to second base in the first inning. He was replaced by Matt Kemp, who didn’t start for the third game in a row.

Ramirez will be evaluated again today to determine if he needs to be placed on the disabled list. He spent two weeks on the DL earlier this season for a strained right calf.

Rafael Furcal was 3-for-5 with a triple and scored a run. Russell Martin was 2-for-5 and scored a run.

The Dodgers end their series with a chance to sweep the Giants today. It will be Vicente Padilla for the Dodgers against Jonathan Sanchez for the Giants. Pregame starts at noon on AM 1220, KHTS.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
