In basketball, Lakers center Andrew Bynum had successful knee surgery and is expected to be ready to return the court by the start of next season.

Bynum averaged 15 points and 8.3 rebounds per game last season en route to the second straight NBA championship for the Lakers. Bynum tore the lateral meniscus in his right knee in the first round of the playoffs against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Bynum played in 65 game regular season games for the Lakers and averaged 24 minutes a game in the playoffs playing with an injured knee.

In baseball, the Angels made an offer for a power-hitting first baseman, but the deal did not go through.

Derek Lee, who won a batting title for the Chicago Cubs in 2005, rejected a trade offer that would have sent him to the Angels. Lee has a no-trade clause in his contract and decided to remain a Cub rather than be traded to Angels.

On the field, the Angels continued their slide in the American League West standings, losing to the Boston Red Sox, 7-3. The Angels have lost four in a row and seven of their last eight games.

The Dodgers traded for an all-star outfielder giving up a couple prospects for Scott Podsednik from the Kansas City Royals.

Podsednik, who was on the World Series champion Chicago White Sox in 2005, joins an outfield with all-star Andre Ethier in right and Matt Kemp in center. Manny Ramirez has been the regular left fielder for the Dodgers, but he is on the disabled list. Reed Johnson, who has been productive as the Dodgers fourth outfielder, is also on the disabled list.

The Dodgers gave up their top catching prospect, Lucas May, and Class A pitcher Elisaul Pimentel for Podsednik.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers lost to the San Diego Padres, 6-1. It’s starting to look like if the Dodger pitchers can’t throw a shutout, they aren’t going to win many games.

Padres starter Clayton Richard and four relievers combined to give up only four hits to the Dodgers. Jamey Carroll got two of those hits and drove in the Dodgers only run in the third inning.

The Dodgers conclude their three-game series with the first-place Padres today at Petco Park. It will be Vicente Padilla for the Dodgers against Mat Latos for the Padres. Pregame starts at 3 on AM 1220, KHTS.

About Connie Jones

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe. All three of her kids went to Santa Clarita schools. Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project.” “KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for my wedding anniversary – gotta love that!”
